Stab a screwdriver in the bottom of the filter and it drains pretty well. Then loosen it with the screwdriver. Easy and no more oil than a towel can handle.

Don't think it's dangerous at all.

They were AAE/Safari racks, and I had problems too. BoxRocket had an ITRE failure, Pliny had incorrectly installed ITREs and play in the ITRE, and I had this:

The issue isn't me getting to it. Mine is sitting on a lift when I change my oil so I have more than enough room.

It's the fact that the filter wrench doesn't cooperate to allow me to loosen it only from the wheel well.

I use a strap wrench like this, going through the fender.

I never have to use the wrench, I just hand tighten and I'm good to go. The guys a jiffy lube or wherever you go tighten those things down too damn much

Hand tighten it myself every time. Never loosens by hand 6,000 miles later.

I just use the wrench to loosen it then take it off by hand. Try to get it turned over quick as possible. Don't get too much oil coming out. One of these days I'll remember to throw a plastic bag over it before hand.

Like I said the Rack Doctor unit has been trouble free. Others have had good results, but some others haven't.

Really, the consensus I gather on steering racks is:
-Buy OEM if you have the cash
-Rebuild the OEM if you have the time and ability
    -Gamble on a rebuilt unit

I don't think there is a option for quality new aftermarket racks. I lost out on my time, an alignment, and return shipping replacing what is considered the best option in new aftermarket racks.

Same. I just turn wheel to left. pop out liner clips and change the filter. No drama. I dont care about the spilt oil though.

Hmm just checked camelback toyota and it looks like an OEM power rack for 4wd is around 550$ vs about 400$ from rack dr plus you get a 100$ core deposit back(minus shipping..) Guess I'll see what happens, thanks for all the input it was really helpful.

Edit: I think maybe I'm looking at the wrong thing on camelback toyota, sometimes those diagrams are kind of hard to figure out, I'll probably have to call to get a price.

Rack Doctor was like $250 plus $100 core and return shipping of the core. I though I remember OEM being between $800 & $900. :notsure:
