Truck Wont Move in 4x4

Hi All Ive had my 2010 Tacoma TRD OFFRoad for 3 days now, I am still kind confused with all these new buttons like LSD/RearLockDiff. Yesterday when I was testing it around, I put the truck in H4x4 for the first time and drove around the block. When I was about to park the truck and turned the steering all the way to Left or Right, The truck stoppped moving (like it had parking break on). I had to hold down the accelerator a little to make it move (automatic transmission). And every time I let go of accelerator it would just stop moving like brakes are pressed or something.

Now is this normal for these trucks not to move in 4x4 while turning hard ? Am I doing something wrong here ? ALso this is my first Truck.

 

Do not turn your truck on dry pavement in 4x4.

The owners manual I think states to use your truck in 4x4 each month for 10 miles, (I don't remember exactly), but you should do it in a straight line, etc. Turning on dry pavement is putting a tremedous amount of stress on your drivetrain. I'm sure Chris4x4 will be around to explain exactly why.

Could you explain a little more? I'm no mechanic and my understanding of 4x4 workings is limited.

Part time 4x4 systems are designed for off road use or low traction situations like snow. There are systems (usually called all wheel drive) like Subaru and Audi quattro that can be used on dry pavement.

Anytime you're in 4WD and the truck doesn't want to move - DON'T FORCE IT.
That's a sign that the driveline is binding. If you force it to move, you could break something. The CV axles on the front axle shafts can pop out if you're running in 4WD and making tight turns.

If the truck doesn't want to move - straighten the steering wheel, take it out of 4WD, then try to move it forward or backward slightly until it comes out of 4WD. Don't be surprised if after you've taken it out of 4WD (button or lever) - the truck stays in 4WD (light on the dash) for a bit afterwards. The truck won't disengage until all the torque-load is released from the driveline.

 

Never use your 4x4 on the concrete in turns, it will chop up your tires. learn about your stuff before you use it btw you don't want to break anything.

 

I can't believe some people still don't know not to drive around on pavement with 4wd engaged. In a straight line down the highway to lube the system up is OK, but turning on pavement can break something in no time.

 

Thats exactly what happened, when I took switch frmo 4x4 to H2 the 4x4 light was blinking and I wasnt sure what to do to stop it.

As manual say so, thats the only reason I was using 4x4 for first time. I never go OFF ROAD , not sure why I purchased Off road instead of SPORTS. BTW this is my first truck.

 

I would jack up the whole truck to get rid of that driveline bind. Stomping the gas in 4 wheel in the driveway isnt recommended. Im sure that rear locker if it is on isnt helping either.

Guess I was abusing this new truck. Is there not to do list for NEWB truck owners ? BTW Thank you all for your input I am glad to be a part of these fourms. That stopped me from ruining my new truck, I have 79 Miles on it so far.

I'm sure we all didn't read the manual before we drove our Tacomas and pushed every button while at it. Give him a break he asked us a question about his truck because obviously he's interested in learning and having fun with his truck. I never binded bad until trying to back up in 4x4 while turning sharply. What happens is your front transfer case is rotating both front wheels at the same speed. This is bad when your turning sharply because it doesn't allow the outer wheel to spin faster to cover more distance.
