Thats Exhaust valves not intake valves. Although I bet exhaust valves look like crap after the winter.
Intake valves will never ever get in Winter to even remote temperature required to burn of carbon.
Personally I think cleaning intake valves is only fun 1-2 times after that I rather get car with out that problem. And its $1000 for pretty much any shop to pull the heads and clean them for you.
Been there done that. I like our 4.0L because I dont have to clean that crap anymore. Not planning to getting into that exercise again.

When in "Atkinson" cycle, part of the fuel charged air is pushed back into the intake track, thus coating the valves with fuel. That being said, Ive had a couple DI engine vehicles, and none have had carbon build issues. Only issues Im aware of, that were wide spread, was with the Hyundai/Kia DI engines.

Dude its showing 67F where you are, its warmer today over here, feels like spring at 26F :D
I bet you dont have to worry about rusting frames either.
Different place different problems so not surprised you had not much issues with this.
As I said Cali, Arizona Texas probably will not see this as the issue. Northern portion of the country will have to fight with this.
I am at the point in the life that even so I could deal with something I would rather avoid it. Hence, I would rather drive something else.
BTW 67F is freaking unfair..

Hang in there, BlueT. We're almost thru it. Only 2 more months and it will be the middle of April!

Just be glad you don't have a Diesel. Cold weather and Diesels don't mix well

My 81 on its 1st engine was so worn at 370k that when the cold came.. really anything teens or below it wouldn't have enough compression to get started.. talk about lame standing outside waiting for something cause the temp dropped. Glad I blew that engine up..

I remember one of the neighbors on the farm had an old air starter Mack. That thing was a cold blooded bitch. Freaked me out when I was a little kid to hear that thing cranking

I love my '06! I still get compliments on it! In October we were at the dealer looking at a car for her and the salesman started drooling over my Taco (oh, that sounds bad) asked about a trade. I told him he would have to pry the keys out of my cold dead hand and fight my wife for them!

Same here man, no sale. My Taco has given me no issues to bitch about yet. It is easy to work on and gets better mileage than my Silverado did with the 'arcane' 4.0 V6.

This new engine has both direct and port injection. The only Toyotas with DI that have problems with carbon buildup are the 2.5L V6s that have only direct injection. Toyota has also been running D4-S for ages without the issues that Audi/VW/etc experienced with carbon buildup.

Additionally, the VVTi on the 2GR, updated 1GR, etc have the ability to have the intake valves partially open on he beginning of the compression stroke already. This new modified Atkinson cycle will allow more aggressive retarding of the valve timing than before to further reduce pumping losses. It is called VVT-iW (for wider angle application of the VVT). I imagine the engineers can do all sorts of things with their choice of direct and port injection and smart injection timing to mitigate buildup concerns. They already have full time Atkinson cycle with D4-S on the IS300h in non US markets, so this isn't a first for them.

Yes as people learn more about these cars and NEW fuel systems they will learn the importance of maintenance! The problem is most people have no understanding of the difference between port inj. and Gas Direct Injection. .aka GDI. You have got to change the oil often and I would personally run a quality engine oil cleaner through every oil change at a minimum as well as a quality fuel inj cleaner. I could go into the reasons why but it takes so long.

I'm in the industry and I deal with and train people on this.

I'm not a know 8t all, but front brakes do most of the stopping and typically wear out faster.

Absolutely normal for fronts to wear fast period.

In the tacoma especially. . With drums in the rear there is much more pad surface arear (shoe) than the disks so even if they were loaded the same it will not wear as fast.

    X2

In old cars with proportioning valve you would take car after brake job and hammer brakes until all 4 wheels lock. If front was locking before rear you adjusted brake force to go more to the rear, until all 4 would lock at the same time.

New cars also have a proportioning valve. It is built into the ABS. To adjust the brakes as you suggest is dangerous!

Ok, now that everyone is done complaning about the 3rd gen Tacoma, - that hasn't even hit the road yet, Maybe we can start a thread complaning abot the 4th gen Tacoma, - we haven't seen that one on the road yet either.

I like the complaining, I am really entertained by this thread.

There is a LOT of car knowledge here. In honor for the first-model year of the 3rd gen Tacoma, I think we should list off first-model year disasters for any vehicle/any make that we know of.

I'll start. The biggest one I can think of is the early 2003/2004 Ford Powerstroke, the 6.0L when they tried to put it in the Excursion, and it was in the F250/F350 too I think. I think they tried to make it for two years and had to buy them back under a lemon law in most states.

    http://autoweek.com/article/car-new...stroke-woes-anger-buyers-drive-warranty-costs

Absolute nightmare for Ford. Luckily with later versions of the Powerstroke they seem to have a pretty decent motor.

The best think to do is DO IT YOURSELF. Time and time again we where disappointed by others, so our parents told us just that. What will take to build our own truck the way we like and how our hearts desire? Not much I think, but we are a bunch of uneducated lazy underachievers with big demands. O I forgot, and easily disappointed by others.

But wait... all the guys/gals complaining about the 3rd gens probably have newer trucks. So ...say in 10 years, they'll need to buy another truck around the time the 4th gen comes out. So...we'll have to wait and see how they react when they know they need/want to buy something new.

For everyone else....they're just not loyal Toyota fans and nothing will make them happy. :p:p:p:p:p

I wouldn't say Im personally disappointed, mainly in one aspect with the only complaint I have so far from a looks standpoint is that front end, just can't grow on me, I look every day or so and nope, just goofy looking, reminds me of pumba from lion king or that ice age sloth. But in 5 years when I look at a new truck if this gen proves to be as reliable I'll be buying one. If I was a guy with an 05 looking to upgrade I'd buy one. A lot of nice new features especially in the off road package. Maybe by 2021 they'll have a front end update.
