Did they say how they were going to insulate all the equipment and ducting ?

    Per the qoute, it says...

    - install new r8 duct system.
    - insulate all exposed sheet metal with 1.5" insulation.
    - seal all metal to metal joints with duct mastic.

We keep our 50 gal around 120 with plenty of hot water. 160 is very high and can cause burns if your not careful. I think both elements have a t stat

I see you're in Cali , that's probably fine for winter , how hot does your attic get in summer ? Will your system provide cooling as well ?

It gets hot. Not sure about the attic, but outside temps regularly get 100*

There is a gable attic fan, so that should help to keep the heat down a little in the attic.

That's kinda the flip side of insulation but probably not a big deal unless you are also trying to provide cooling

I have a severe ice dam and some roof leakage. Regular shingles.

I have calcium chloride and magnesium chloride. Are either safe for the shingles?

Your roof is a one day roof for a crew of 4 guys who know what they are doing. Unless it is way bigger then it looks in the picture.

I've heard the trick of putting them in nylon stockings and placing them up there. My gutter is a solid block of ice as well

I'm south of Boston MA and we're getting clobbered this winter

No. They seem like they would be pretty labor intensive but not overly difficult.

Without knowing the climate and local codes/ practices its hard to give you solid info. But 1.5 sounds about normal. But it also depends on if the new unit is bigger than the closet and amount of extra duct they are adding.

I like them . The cutting , and general handling is intensive but the major work is in building a frame that can carry them

    They are cool though

This is on my 1st floor, no attic.

One room may not but I know the 2nd room was innsulated and I used rafter baffling with it. It is not very steep so I am prone to it
