How To: Throttle body cleaning 2005+ V6

I'm going to do this hopefully tonight. It's at 205,000 and I don't know if it has ever been cleaned.

 

Did mine last week for first time. 105k miles, definitely some gunk in there. Also took out secondary air/carbon filter, better throttle response now

 

Great write up. How often should we do this?

 

Got around to it tonight, dang definitely needed to be cleaned. Will see how she drives tomorrow, too many beers in me to take her out now.





Also did the air filter while I was in there, don't forget it!

 

That's what mine looked like ^^^^ but a little worse hahaha, previous owner didn't do it. Most people don't, that's why this forum is great. Makes me aware of maintenance that most overlook

 

Throttle body looks nasty - how many miles ?

 

206,000 miles, i'm still waiting for the RPM's to settle back down. 2k on start-up and hovers right near 1.4k idle.

 

You might try taking the battery cables off the battery - hold them together for 10 minutes - that will bleed down any bad memory the PCM has retained - hook the battery back up - should be OK after you drive it a while and it learns the clean throttle body.

 

I did this tonight and noticed quite a difference. Seems to rev easier on acceleration, and throttle lag from stopped is basically gone. Nice writeup!

 

Did it today, it only took me 20 min. I have 50K and the RPMs are pretty much the same. I cleaned MAF and TB.

I've read how it's bad to manually open and close your throttle body and it can mess your rig up. Obviously I've read incorrectly as most of you are doing that very thing when cleaning it. That's good news for me as I will be attempting this when I get my 2005 Sport back in a few months from getting a new frame etc. Awesome write up!

 

Just cleaned mine and i got a p0306 missfire cylinder 6 code when i started it

 

What?!

 

Just cleaned my MAF and throttle body.

Started the truck.

Ultragauge says "ALARMA ALARMA pending code: p0306"

I open google, typed: "tacoma trouble code p0306."
Result comes up "toyota tacoma v6 trouble code p0306: cylinder six MISSFIRE"

Cleared the code and drove two miles, no issues.

Shut the truck off and restarted it, no issues.

Parked the truck.

 

They're good at spelling... so is the CEL on?

Thanks OP for taking the time to make this write up. The pictures where very helpful it made it easer to see what you where talking about. I use to do this on my 99 Tacoma so I'm glad that I can do it to this one as well. Wouldn't of attempted it with out it. Had 23*** on my truck and it was not to bad. Awesome job !! I love this forum !!!

 

Thanks for the writeup OP! Did this yesterday and noticed smoother idle and better throttle response.
For anyone that has notorious bad luck like me, and are worried about manually opening the butterfly... I did mine slightly different:
I followed the OP up to the point of opening the butterfly. Instead I just sprayed cleaner on the intake side and cleaned as good as possible. I then removed the TB via the OP instructions.....


This made me realize I had never truly seen the color black before.... Yikes. Anyways, I sprayed and cleaned the engine side as good as possible. I then bolted the TB back on and reconnected the battery. I had my assistant get in the truck and open the butterfly via the gas pedal (ignition on but NOT running). With the butterfly open I could then reach the small places i couldn't reach with the butterfly closed. Once done, reassemble and enjoy!
