    ROFL!!!

Its too bad we can't disable ABS, and leave VSC intact. Otherwise I'd consider perm disable too.

I think as a personal policy I'll disable ABS when off road, or anytime on, or near snow or ice.

And yes, merge this thread with the other. :)

I'm afraid you sir are ... wrong. I have personal first hand experience with this issue multiple times on at least 3 different brands of tires. The current set of studs are very good and the issue pops up much less now - (actually never - I flip the switch and don't give it the option). Snow driving experience for me personally ... a lot. After years of logging here in the NW I have backed up more miles than many have ever driven. One of the points that sold me on this pickup is how well it handles snow, ice, hill climbs for a mostly stock vehicle. The VSC is very impressive in how fast it responds to a slide (takes all the fun out!) I will be using this rig this weekend to skid logs weighing up to 3000 lbs for the neighbors firewood pile - why? because with these tires, locker, turn radius, clearance and small stature it out pulls my other two pickups ('68 f250 & '97 dodge 3/4ton) - bottom line is that the pickup has great features - ABS ain't one of them!

I can not; however, go to toyota and open a claim: it wouldn't go over well. "Sirs, I have modified your vehicle from factory conditions ... now it don't work right, please - you need to fix it!"

So if I unplug just one wheel sensor that will disable my ABS. i have had this issue a few times, I had it happen this morning. It's freaky/scary. I would love to have my truck back, take the ABS,TRACTION CONTROL, STABILITY CONTROL and all that other bullshit and give me back my truck !!!!! Wish I could buy my 1991 XTRA CAB brand new, I would sell this truck tomorrow.

I don't believe these tires have the mountain/snowflake symbol on the sidewall. It takes a soft rubber compound and the right tread pattern to be any good on snow/slush/ice. Your standard A/T tire can feel like a racing slick in the greasy stuff.

If you do shop around for winter tires I have had good luck running General Altimax Arctic.

Best of luck to you and safe travels.

I live in the maritimes in Canada and we get a lot snow. This is my first Tacoma and I've also had this happen to me more then once. Mind you im not running a dedicated winter tire, BFG A/T's, but i've been surprised by the ABS pulsing at such a rapid pace to the point it made no difference if I had my foot on the brake or off.

I've also had this happen on my other vehicles, but never quite to the extent of the Tacoma. I have just had to learn to be ready for this type of situation more frequently in the Tacoma.

What I dont get is there is so much hate in this site if someone post about this happening they are talked down to as if they are just making this stuff up.

Well the tires certainly have no problem "going" in snow and ice. I've purposely gone into deep snow etc to try out the locker/atrac etc. Never have gotten stuck. the tires are brand new, so im going to use them up. Next time (i hope there isn't a next time) i'll just slam on the e-brake, unless abs overrides that to

Hmm, been driving manuals like that in slippery conditions for almost 25 years in many different vehicles. I've never needed to replace a clutch. Ever.

I'm also not letting the clutch out at high RPM.

    This.

    And this.

Refer to my first comment in this post. I do use the brakes on dry/high traction surfaces. And a combination of very light brakes and engine braking in less traction situations.

I am very appreciative of those who have done all the work on the how-to's for disabling the ABS when it's nasty out. Thank you. I prefer to do something about a problem if possible, and this is easily solved.

It would be pretty nice to have an ABS off button on the dash. Would be even cooler to tie it in to the traction control switch.

    Might look into that.

How is downshifting a manual going to kill the clutch ? Do you just pop it into neutral and use the brakes ?

Naysayers? We just haven't had it happen to us. But I for one would like to know the root cause. I am beginning to suspect sticky valves in the ABS unit. As brake fluid absorbs water, and really doesn't move very much for long periods of time and the unit takes a while to get warm in the winter since it is not heated, it is the best candidate so far.

No ABS = No A-Trac. I thought your Taco was a sport, but I have been wrong many times in the past.

Have to agree, I kick all my auto-magics (including the Subarus) into neutral going down steep slippery roads, but then I learned to drive during winter, in Pittsburgh, RWD Regal station wagon.

I moded 1999 Taco so much it had turned to Land Cruiser
    Its not sticky valve
    Its not Tires
Its not Magical Black ICe that appears and disappears at will.

Its stupid ABS system and software behind it.
This will never be addressed by NHTSA because as per them "ABS extends braking distance on slippery surface " So in essence ABS trying to kill you is normal. :D
If it did not happen to you, just give it a time, it will happen in most inconvenient time.

this abs issue is very real I just got a ticket for impeding traffic
was on the gateway road which is slightly on top of a hill, 5 degrees at most, as I was descending to come to my stop the truck slid into on coming traffic which was a police officer. he gladly explained to me that I made a rolling stop as I try to control the truck to the right. I explained to him that my brakes had failed, with no luck was issued a citation.

You have to remember el paso is nothing but desert and hot temps, this makes the snow conditions void and not part of the cause. I my self are trying to understand what caused this. thanks for the ticket Mr. cop

These connectors hard to find, is the front or the rear easier to get to. I'm thinking unplug it, fill both connectors full of Dialectric grease and tie wrap any loose wires.

As you stated in your OP, this is a common occurrence. Many threads on this exact issue. Seems to be something Toyota should address.

I have encountered this issue twice in my '09 with 285/75/16 Toyo M/T's. Scared the living crap out of me. The ABS on these trucks works (or doesn't work if you will) differently that any other vehicle I've driven. With my '14 I've attempted to duplicate the issue I had wiht my '09 and haven't been able to, but I'm always wary. I run different tires on my '14, 265/75/16 Cooper ST Maxx.

I live in LAS VEGAS (yes the desert) and its happened to me.

and just so you know its ABS and not Toyota's ABS....I was driving a dodge ram when it happened. (work truck), its 100% stock besides BFG M/T tires and a roof rack.

This was off road....Going about 45mph on a flat dirt road. You know how sometimes a tractor will "smoothen" the road but it leaves behind the tractor tracks which are almost like those rumble-strips on the side freeway to wake you up if you drift off.

So here I am going over the tractor tracks on a very flat dirt road, its making every bit of the truck vibrate like crazy, and then its time to slow down and turn to another dirt road off the side. I hit the brakes and I slow down for a second and then nothing happens....I just keep going even though my foot is on the brakes. The rumble strips created by the tractor had caused ABS to kick in for whatever reason and I couldn't stop.

ABS = needs to be shut off when off road!
