Does anyone know if there's a brand/line of single-DIN aftermarket head units which are compatible with Toyota steering wheel controls out of the box?

I'm looking to replace my system to make room for a CB and because the factory unit seems to have some kind of a loose connection in it somewhere which makes it shut down randomly. I'm not looking to get elaborate, but would like to retain the wheel controls, and the adapter kits out there cost more than the head units I'm currently looking at, so it's not worth the price if I have to go that route.

    thanks,

For some reason it didn't occur to me to check Amazon for the adapter, I can live with the $50 that amazon wants, as opposed to the $140 that Crutchfield lists it at...

I can confirm that the Axxess unit works perfectly with my Pioneer AppRadio 4 in my 2011 Tacoma.

They also have a wireing harness you can buy for like 5 bucks that will plug into the stock plugs, so you don't have to cut anything. It worked fine on my 2014 Tacoma

It's some money, but I'm using a PAC SWI-CP5 in another car which is programmable via device app for the vehicle with connection instructions for about any car on the planet and all aftermarket head unit brands. Works like a champ. Also gives easy customization on the controls, such as long-press, etc. Disclaimer: I've not used it in the Tacoma, yet, but I suspect it'd be great.

If you go with the Access definitely get the add-on harness, makes things really easy.

So I have the Axxess unit but it doesn’t work, it doesn’t even have the led lights like in the instructions. Do you think they sent me the wrong one?

Mine hasn't worked since I spliced it in, but I've been too lazy for a few years now to pull the dash back apart to try to fix it.

I think there might either be a mistake in the installation instructions or some of the wire coloring might be a little confusing/ambiguous and since I clearly didn't connect something to the right wire somewhere. I've got a JVC single-DIN head unit (used the other half of the space to put in a Cobra 18WXSTII in-dash CB).
