I was re adjusting my back up camera angle tonight, while doing so I went to check it and when I put my truck in reverse I guess I slapped the shifter over to the left too hard and it jammed and got stuck. Its not in any gear but the shifter will not move. I'm guessing I broke something in the transmission, if anyone has any idea what I did please help me out.

I do have a urd short throw shifter kit, I have pulled the shifter right out and the transmission seems to be jammed, I tried using a breaker bar to move it and it would barely move.

Thanks man, I'm guessing this will be an excuse to put my new throw out bearing and clutch in...

looks like its stuck in two gears at the same time or the transmission thinks its in two gears .
Detents hold the transmission in the selected gear .
Interlocks prevent shifting into 2 gears at the same time .
One of your shift forks could be worn enough to cause an interlock issue .
Its a matter of removing the interlocks on the side of the transmission casing and moving the fork back into the neutral position .
You will need a schematic to figure out what detents and interlocks to remove .
One minute , and I will edit this post

I am gonna recommend having one of your buddies rock the truck back and forth by hand while you are sitting in the cab trying to free the shifter up . The rocking may get the shifter fork back into neutral . If this doesnt work , try starting the truck and letting out the clutch slowly

Its currently not in a gear as I can start the truck and take my foot off the clutch, but being stuck in between two gears would make sense.

Will rocking it do anything if its not in gear?

Yup , we know the transmission gearing is in neutral , but the transmission thinks its in gear . This means one of your shift forks is a little worn . Its a common problem with alluminum shift forks. Rock the truck back and forth while you mess with the shifter . Thats the quickest way to fix it . The hard way is removing all the balls and springs .

I just had my room mate try rocking it and it seems like it is stuck in a gear, even though I can start it and take my foot off the clutch without it stalling. I had him hook his vehicle up and try towing it forward a bit while I wiggled the shifter and it didnt do anything.

When you accidentally slapped the shifter , was the transmission in first gear with truck turned off ? I am assuming you were adjusting the camera with the truck turned off ?

Truck was turned off and in neutral, I turned the key forward but didnt start it and then went to shift the truck into reverse, I slapped it hard because I always have to since I installed my urd short throw shifter. When I did that it just jammed over to the left. I wonder if it started to go up into first while I was hitting it over and I jammed it over to the left while it was half way shifted up into first.

Its a little tough to get the shift forks settled back into neutral when the gearing is in neutral . If the transmission gearing was actually in gear , rocking the truck by hand makes the shift fork pop back into neutral .
Second , i am not sure if you broke something .
The only thing I can recommend is removing your detents and interlocks one by one and using a small screwdriver , manually place the shift fork into neutral for each gear .
Did this for a lot of customers in the past . If you think its above your comprehension , you could always tow it to a trans shop and request they try it assuming nothing is broken .

If it involves removing the transmission then it is beyond me. It is going to be -25 here the next couple days so if it is something I can do in my drive way without removing the transmission its not going to be fun..

    I hear you !
    Its -40 where I live .
I can try and find you some better info . Some of those detents and interlocks can be hell to get at while the trans is in the truck .

Your post is new . Maybe this has happened to another Tacoma owner and somebody else will chime in .
Here is the complete transmission manual for your truck while we wait

I appreciate your help gearcruncher, you seem very knowledgeable about this kind of stuff. I don't know where to begin and I definitely do not want to start unbolting things on my transmission trying to wing it and figure it out.

Any guidance with checking the forks and making sure they are in neutral without removing the transmission is greatly appreciated.

I have had my transmission lock up twice like yours in 240k mi. I found that if i let it sit and warm up for a while it will come free. Lot of trying to shift clutch in clutch out and it would eventually pop free. Dont force it to hard but be firm. Both times were when I was shifting into reverse.

So do you figure if I just let it sit and idle for a while it may come loose? Did you do anything else to get it free? Thanks

I just went to start it and it now thinks its in first...towing it forward must have done this.

Edit- Turns out its in 2nd. I let it warm up for a while and it still wouldn't budge, Took it for a drive and tried to warm it up more and that didnt help either. At least its driveable at this point. I am going to try to have my room mate tow or rock the truck backwards later today to see if that helps free it up.

Well I was on my way home from the ford dealership, was looking at some fx4's and my truck decided to pop out of 2nd, I was stuck in the middle of traffic and the shifter still wouldnt move. After hammering on the shifter for a while it broke loose and its back to normal! PHEW! Thanks to everyone who offered help.
