Ah, I like a stick (phrasing) so I didn't even think to check the AT. Mine is a '99 so I am used to efficient manuals. Apples to purple bananas my bad.

I have a 410 rear on my current vehicle and hate it. Would rather it be geared more for highway driving.

A lot of it has to do with driver preference. US manual transmission buyers seem to be allergic to downshifting after they've reached top gear, so most manuals these days come with pretty aggressive gearing. The Tacoma's 6MT 6th gear is more aggressive than the 5AT's 5th gear.

I think we'll see a bigger gearing spread (or a taller rear end) on the new 6MTs because I'm betting that the new engine makes better torque than the 1GR around 2500 RPM. That will help MT mileage.

Traded the 2015 TRD Pro 6spd Supercharged on a PowerWagon and could not be happier. My 2011 Tacoma with the TX Baja package (Added by me) is still treating me great. My 1985 Toyota never skips a beat.
That will do great for mpg but man.. I would love to see the same sort of gearing in the 6sp except possibly a taller overdrive 1-5 are perfectly set up for towing.

The bottom line is toyota will not improve the tacoma on a grand scale until sales flop and everyone is running to other brands. Why would they? 2015 sales are still strong. Only doing facelifts, certain package deal, colors etc. is all they have needed to do since when.... 2005? Yes the 2016 is branded new only because of the Colorado coming out again. Once the Colorado sales fall or vice versa, only then will toyota look at seriously upgrading the tacoma. Tacoma has no real threat at this point in the game, so why do anything different.

That is not how the car business works. They don't just have a new truck sitting on the shelf waiting to be released when they get some competition. I've read that the 1GR update was supposed to get into the Tacoma but the economy tanked and they cancelled the project -- Tacoma gets their engines from the Alabama Toyota plant rather than Japan like the FJ and 4Runner. The new truck may have been delayed a time or two from the original plan, but these plans are made 5, 6 years in advance. When this update was being planned, the old Colorado wasn't even off the market yet.

When I bought my 95 tacoma, it was quite different then the earlier ones.
Same thing happened when I bought the 2007 tundra.

Last year, my wife sold her 2007 Rav 4 and we bought a 2014 Rav 4. Same car family in all three examples, but all much different then the earlier versions.

I am betting this 2016 will be the same.

In a short period of time, people will get used to the more aggressive front end and the 3.5 engine.

Remember how different the ford super duty looked when they restyled it, and of course the restyled Dodge trucks.

Agreed...I see it growing on a lot of people...
I just don't understand how people continue to say its a "facelift"?
    2012-2015 was a facelift...
the 2016 has different engine, trans, interior, drivetrain, body

It is because most people are stupid. The 2016 is mostly a new truck, "people" just don't want to admit the truth.

Just average the mpg ratings of the 2015 Sienna AWD and a 2015 Colorado and BAM, that's where the 2016 Tacoma will be rated. Is anybody actually naive or plain stupid enough to believe it will be better than the Colorado? Toyota has never been a big MPG player with their SUVs, trucks and vans.

The 2016 Tacoma DCLB 4x4 will probably get the same or worse mpg as a 2015 Colorado DCLB 4x4. Similar engine, similar technology, similar dimensions, 6-speed auto. What a shocker.

The 2011+ Tundra is not Japan made like the 4runner and FJ and it had the dual vvti motor. My only guess is that Toyota clearly knew the Tacoma sales wouldn't go down so they just kept putting in the regular 4.0L which probably costs a little less.....

I don't think that is the correct engine, especially the output specificaitons (my guess is the output will be less). The above engine, 2GR-FSE is an Otto cycle engine. We know the 3.5 liter V6 in the Tacoma will have D-4S and is an Atkinson cycle engine. One application of 3.5L V6 with D-4S and atkinson cycle is the Lexus GS450h, 2GR-FXE.

    286hp @ 6,000 rpm
    254 lb-ft. @ 4,600 rpm
    91 Octane fuel

More hp and less torque than the current 4.0 liter V6 in the Tacoma.

We have heard more power and more hp from Toyota regarding the 3.5 liter V6, which the above specifications meet. I have yet to hear from a Toyota press release or Toyota representative that it will have more torque. I have heard nothing specific regarding torque from Toyota, which is concerning. I certainly hope it has more torque however if its strictly an atkinson cycle engine I don't see how they will accomplish that. My only hope is that this engine will have VVT-iW (w meaning wide) that allows for the engine to operate in both atkinson and otto cycle depending on demand.

Or Toyota feels that the torque output to the wheels will be the same or better than the current 4.0 liter V6 with updated gearing in the 2016 (speed 6 sp auto, new transfer case and rear differential).

Another indiciator that this is not the engine:

The Lexus IS350 that utlizes this engine, 2GR-FSE, has a redline of 6,400rpm. The gauge pictures of the 2016 Tacoma show a redline of 6,000rpm, the same as the Lexus GS450h, 3.5L, atkinson, D-4S 2GR-FXE engine...

Where is it built, then? I've seen no indication that the updated 1GR has ever been built at TMMAL. That plant supplies the Tundra UR engines and did the Tundra 1GR up until the updated 1GR started production.
