Fuel Filter Maintenance

I know that toyota does not call for replacing the fuel filter, however I still think that it should be replaced.

What do you think would be the proper mileage to replace the fuel filter? So far my taco has 53k miles.

I am thinking that I will replace it now and just get a crappy one from Autozone, being that I work there.

 

I don't know, I think Toyota says 100,000 or not at all. I would say every 50,000 miles is good, I will change mine when I get to 30,000 miles. But not because it needs it, but because it will give me something to do on my truck.

 

i replace mine every 15k miles. probably not necessary to do it that often, but peace of mind is a good thing....and less chance of it getting clogged all to hell. and i use the ones from autozone....no probs with them.

 

Well I guess I should listen to the man that gets 19-21 on avg.

I haven't gotten those numbers since my trip to Florida. However once I was in florida and switched from the stock bf rugged trails to Nitto Terra Grapplers, I have not been able to get past 18 mpg.

These tires also have like 6k miles on them, so I think they are definitely worn in and should be past the initial bad mileage period.

 

yeah....my mileage is still good to go...even with the sliders i welded on. my foot ait quite as heavy as when i was younger,so i know that helps the most with it. the terra grapplers are a heavier tire than the rugged fails i believe, so that may be a contributing factor there.

 

You have the 3.4L?

If yes.... It's one of the easiest jobs to do..... so, do it now. Won't hurt anything.

Just be careful not to twist the hard lines. It's easier to put the new one in if you disconnect the hard lines from the body at both ends.

Do you think the fuel filter could help mpg's?

 

changed mine at 30k. i get 17-18 mpg on average but didnt notice a drop or increase when i changed it.

 

30k is not even broken in on taco's

 

i dumped the gas from the filter out and there was quite a bit of dirt in it just after 30K. i read on here somewhere that someone changed theirs after like 100k and it looked like creek muck when they dumped it. its not that expensive and super easy to do so why not be on the safe side?

 

i changed mine at 125K and it looked to be an original, and it was dirty as all hell

 

I just changed mine before my drive to the east side for college. I have/had 200,000 at that time and it WAS the original fuel filter lol. I have the 2.7L and it was a dirty **** to change. But I'm definitely not built like a small asian. I hacked it open for shits and giggles and it was pretty narley.

 

Well I must say that replacing this thing is not as easy as it sounds.

Getting to it and put a wrench on it is the easy part, however the 2 bolts connecting the fuel line to the filter just will not budge.

I sprayed them with PB and tapped the hell out of them, but they will not budge. I guess I could try a little harder, but I am afraid of braking the line.

Any suggestions?

 

let the pb sit on them for a day, and spray the stuck bolts a few more times....then try loosening them tomorrow.

 

I'm an avid fuel filter changer since I had one plug up so bad my truck started losing power on hills. However, I found the filter on this Taco to be ridiculously hard to change - for a fuel filter that is. It wasn't that big a deal, but even with the fuel lines loose on both sides of the filter, I thought I was going to kink of break one getting that sucker out of there. Don't know why Toyo made it that tight a fit.

 

I took a mulligan on my first attempt to change the fuel filter on my 2.7

Anyone relocate the filter? It appears to have rubber hoses that could be relocated away from the block. I'd be willing to just chop the filter out and replace with a different filter setup. (I have a Nissan Hardbody that has a nice filter that hose clamps right on. 5 minute change, blindfolded. Just saying...)

 

Sorry. Does the OP have a 4 cyl.? Mine is a 3.4. Yeah I had a Nissan, and still have a subaru, both are much easier. Love this truck though!

 

Still running original fuel filter on my 97 3.4 w/360,000 miles.

 

I chaged mine out at 150k... figiured it would be time...
