It is definitely going to have a locking lid.

 

I'd be interested in a bike carrying system, if it doesn't involve removing the front wheel, and works with disc brakes.

 

The one I'm working on now involves removing the front wheel, but it is very slick.

 

I think I could still fit one bike next to my CMS. If I put the basket in the middle of my bed, I think I could fit my ski racks across it, but skis might not fit because the racks would be too close together.

 

Would it be possible to make these baskets so they sit along the sides of the bed instead of across the middle?

I realize they would be shallow so as to sit on top of the wheel well, but then I could run one on each side and still be able to throw a kayak or whatever down the middle. Also would give options for mounting a hi-lift etc underneath the rails.

 

If you look back in my post #50 you can see that the basket would need different ends to be able to mount the other way. I'm not sure how strong that would be. I didn't put my 200+ lbs in it, but I did lean on it pretty hard and it felt solid.

 

Yeah, it would technically need to be a completely different basket in order to sit on top of the wheel well.

 

But I might entertain the idea of making something like that this summer.

 

I'd definitely be into something like it. Would let me just reach over the bedside to grab something instead of having shit in the middle I couldn't reach.

 

You could always mount it towards the back, or step on a tire to reach further.

 

If I stretch I'm at 5'8". I'm standing on the slider, the tire, or climbing in the bed for everything since I have a 3" lift. Reach over the side...that's funny.

 

Maybe I want to sleep down the middle! Regardless, I don't have any problems setting stuff down into my bed from the side and I'm only on 5'7" if I'm wearing boots.

I just want the long stuff option. I really like this design of sitting below the top of the bed, I just don't want to lose the length. If I was going to do that I'd just buy a toolbox which is already lockable if not adjustable on positioning.

Just my $.02, cargo along the sides would be great, if it doesn't happen NBD.

 

What about a basket that hung from the cleat rail and went long ways down the side? (Somebody may have already emailed that idea to me, so I'll have to give them credit for it).

Here's what I'm thinking:

Two new cargo management systems that are designed to hang from the cleat rail, and rest on top of the wheel well.

- One is an open basket style like the one in this thread
- One is a closed toolbox with a hinged, locking lid.

They will both be designed to run long ways for easy access from the side of the truck, and will not require crossbars to mount.

They can both be slid fore and aft by loosening two knobs.

Somebody may have already emailed me this idea. Please chime in if it was you so I can give you the credit.

Either way, this is going to the top of my design list. The sweet new bike mount will have to wait.

 

That would probably work out exactly as I was thinking. I was just considering using your crossbars to allow end to end mounting which is fairly easier to design. Plus I was going to figure out how to mount a hi-lift and shit to them anyway.

The one thing I'm concerned about with a single sided design is how to keep it really secure to the rail and prevent it from bouncing around.

I'd be happy with one that ran the length of my bed, though this obviously wouldn't work for short bed folks.

Missing an ACL in one knee and some cartridge issues in the other. A step is a nice thing. I don't like the one that hangs down below the bumper.

 

We exchanged some PMs along these lines back when you were soliciting for new ideas. Don't know if I was the only one on this track.
