I do have a tiny crate...its the one we received when she was shipped to us from Hawaii. she's gotten a little bigger but still fits good in it. I only use it when taking her to the vet, etc.

Take the pee pads out. Some contain a scent designed to attract the dog. Once they learn to pee where they sleep, it becomes a harder cycle to break than potty training them in the first place ;)

I crate trained my German Shepherd. It's actually very easy. But the last thing you want to do is let the dog pee/poo in the crate. If the dog has an incontinence problem, then pee pads help you out with cleaning. but other than that, the dog shouldn't pee/poo unless it really has to.

As for training, food treats work the best. You can encourage the dog to go in the crate on it's own by tossing the treat just inside the door opening. As time goes on, continue to throw the food further towards the back. Eventually, you only reward the dog at the back of the crate. He/she will learn that the treat comes from the back of the crate.

You can also start feeding the dog in the crate after a while.

During this process, don't shut the crate door just yet. When the dog is comfortable enough going in/out of the crate on it's own, then you can start training the dog to be in the crate with the door closed. This is a gradual process. You shut the door, mark it, open the door, and reward. Do this repeatedly. As you progress, you can leave the door closed longer and longer.

Anyway, it's kinda hard to describe only in words. A trainer or video is much more valuable. I not only got a trainer for a few sessions, but purchased a training video from Leerburg Enterprises. Their basic training video shows crate training. Very valuable.

    Good luck.

Nah. Not at all. The biggest thing in potty training is making sure the dog doesn't pee in the house by teach him/her bladder control. The easiest way is using a crate. There are definitely other ways to do and many have been successful without crates.

How old is she? Take her out as soon as she wakes up!! As soon as she's done eating or drinking!! As soon as she's done playing!! Also take her out every hour or two, depending on her age and PRAISE her when she goes. Doesn't need to be treats involved. Teaching her to go on command also helps when traveling ;)

Yup I remember when I got my pup he was out every 2 hours or so. Play with him a little bit then have him go in his crate for a little bit.

He's crated when nobody is home...and he is at the point where he'll nudge the door open and stand in his crate when I start putting my shoes on.

that every couple hours at night sucked for the first few months...

they have crates that you can adjust the size with a divider as well. we bought a decent one off Amazon for about $100 or so.

I agree with (and do) the advice given on crate training. Also this is great-

Their bladder is the size of nothing for awhile. You can use any words you want (make it short though) to make them go on command when young and it will stick with them. The temps are often in the teens below zero here so with my new pup it has become "Hurry Up!" It works.

    Yes, it does :)

I would get up, pick Riley up, and take him outside. Then put him on the grass and say "go pee". When he peed, "good boy!" and a treat and some play time. Works like a charm now-except he's more selective about where he goes.

Is that a french bulldog? We had a roommate for about a week that had one. No matter how hard I tried it managed to poop or pee inside. Id take it out, it would poop, and then I would bring it in and before I shut the door it was squatting somewhere! She ended up leaving (thank goodness) but I need to get hold of her to see if she was ever able to get it trained. It went in a crate when we weren't home as well.

she will be 4 months at the end of this month. it sucks because I leave the house at 9AM and don't get home till about 8PM. My wife isn't super active in her potty training. she lets her out to play with her and helps with cleaning, but that's about it :(

yes, French bulldog with pit-bull (accidental breeding ) she is a stubborn lil pup!

No offense, then you should find an older dog - one that doesn't need the training and "people"/training time. That's way too long for a pup to pretty much be ignored. It's not fair to the pup. Or find a reliable puppy sitter to take her to. She needs consistency.

I cant get rid of her, I love her...my wife was doing great at first but I feel she is giving up these past few days. I really need her support (shit, she better, I allow her to be a stay at home mom..lol) she just got discouraged the other day cuz our pup went crazy shitting and pissing everywhere after doing great the day before..
