Help with Lost Wheel Lock Key....

I just bought a 06 Tacoma Prerunner 2weeks ago and the wheel lock key was supposed to be in the glove box. Today after washing it I was going to ensure the wheel lock key worked and put it in a more secure place in the truck and....... there is no Wheel Lock Key. So now I want to replace the Locks before I'm stuck somewhere or the Key shows up in the middle of the night. Anyone know the best way to remove the locks? I'm hesitant to take it to a tire shop as I don't want the chrome scratched up. I've heard of pounding on a impact socket but not sure is the hole on the wheel is big enough, seems really small.

tire shop should be able to take em off for you. just have some reg. lugs to replace them.

 

My McGard key broke for my 2000 wheel locks. I went to McGard and they gave me a new one, free.

Maybe contact them and ask them if they can help, assuming yours might be McGard as i think many are? Try calling McGard in Orchard Park New York during business hours and see if they can help you.

 

Hey Rocket I am back at work on Tuesday and we have a master lock set so if they are Toyota wheel locks should be no problem PM me.

 

I've done it with a regular socket but of course you risk breaking it. It's pretty easy.

 

and if they're not toyota locks, just use a regular lug socket on an air impact gun. Press down / pull up on the gun while trying to spin off.. Will take them off quite easily!

 

Pardon my potential stupidity, but aren't most wheel lock keys the same? If not, surely there aren't many differnt kinds of keys.

Take your truck to a tire place and ask them if they have a key you can borrow. Otherwise, I bet if you went to buy a set of locks you could find one that matches yours and get a key with the set.

I think the tire shop is the best option, they probably do that kinda stuff everyday.

 

when I worked at a tire shop, we used an air chisel to get them off. you basicaly make a slot in the lock lug and hammer on it with the air chisel until the lug nut starts turning. Obviously this can do some damage if the guy doesn't really know or care what he is doing, so take it to someone reputable.

Or, you might be able to find a set with the same pattern. take and print a pic of yours, and bring it in with you to different places to buy one.

 

Same problem here. I had the tire changed out for me and when I went to rotate my tires last week I found that it was no longer in the storage compartment. I went back to the shop and they told me they didnt have it anymore. When I finally get my wheels and tires I'll just change them all together.

 

This is the easiest way and it won't damage the wheels.

 

Tire shop. A co worker had his truck in for tires and they didn't give him his key thingy back. When he went back to get it, it was in a drawer full of assorted keys.

 

If you know who the previous owner was, McGard might have a registry showing the key number. IN that case, you just need the key.

I was thinking about getting the McGard lock nuts, but was wondering whether it's correct to use a cone fit nut on these alloy wheels. The stock nuts have a flat base with a washer, which seems like it would be better for the wheel than a cone fit. All the ones on the McGard "applications guide" listed for teh Taco are cone fit. Opinions or experience with these? Is there an alternative product with a flat base and washer?

Had my spare stolen a couple of weeks ago and had to add the McGard spare tire lock, for what it's worth, and am no longer so complacent. Property crime seems way up...

for those who dont know, the keys are very different.
its ususally a circular pattern key, and each pattern is different. so there are probably thousands of different keys, thats why there the best.

Just to let all know. I bought the Sears "Nut Taker Offer Sockets" and they worked like a breeze. Pounded them on with a hammer, used the air gun, zip....they came right off. Just received my new Gorilla Nuts and my wheels are safe once again......unless I hear a tap tap tap,zip zip zip noise at 2am. Then the last sound the thief will hear is "KaBoom!".

man, im too late. I was going to say harbor freight has an emergency lug nut removal kit for 10 bucks. I bought some. Its threaded so it bites on to the bolt and impact away.
