Using the Highlander timer switch, (84871-48030), what is the delay time & is it adjustable?

If you don't draw blood, you're doing it wrong!
The timer stays on for roughly 15 minutes at a time. I'm not sure if it's adjustable - I didn't want to tear apart a $50 switch

How about some new pics of the Highlander mirrors on the Tacoma? Do they come with the blinkers or spotlights too?

It's just the mirror glass that is used...not the whole housing, so it will not give you any feature other than heated mirrors.

I still have the old Highlander switch that I burnt out by not using a relay. I pulled it apart when it happened and don't remember finding anything that would allow timer adjustment.

After roughly 7 years and -40 Wheather my mirrors still worked great.

It's an on off switch you will still need the timer relay.

WolstenTech Timer Relay (from bgreenley's add-on to the OP):

    "Lastly, the magic timer-relay: http://www.wolstentech.com/products/timedelayrelay/tdr-mc.php

You can read about the timer relay above by following this link:
    http://www.wolstentech.com/products/timedelayrelay/timedelayrelay.php
The timer relay is offered in many flavors. The correct flavor to order for this application is the TDR-MLC. This circuit, wired as shown below, will allow you to turn on the mirrors with a single press of the button. If you press the button again before the timer expires, it will cancel your request for the mirrors to be heated. This is really cool, and exactly the way most OEM installations are done. You don’t need another relay in addition to the TDR-MLC. It will drive the mirrors directly. The TDR-MLC can drive 10A continuous current, and each of the mirrors only consumes about 2A each (I bench tested them).

Interesting, aren't the switches and switch blanks the same size for 05-15?

The one in post 406 looks wider than the one for the 05

Actually at a second glance it does, although to me that looks like it is sized to fit in the area under the AC controls etc rather than the area to the left of the steering wheel.

Yeah , I think the difference in size is between the ones on the dash and under the AC controls , that always confused me why they had the 05-11 and 12+ dash ones in different categories on the Aironboard site

Just a thought about fuse rating size. I'll probably be guilty of starting a debate here, hope not. It is in my educated opinion that using a 10amp fuse described in the schematic on page 1 of this post may be pushing the envelope a bit too much. A over rated fuse can be dangerous.

If the relay can handle (max) 10amps, and the wire used (20 ga) is Rated for (roughly) 10 amps, then the fuse should be somewhat less.

I will be doing the ">>>*UPDATE* FOR THE THOSE WITH TRD-OR TACOS (with no switch blanks) <<<" In that instruction the author stated that each mirror pulls 2amps. This would be 4amps total (roughly) so the fuse could safely be a 7.5 amp fuse. This would not compromise the integrity of any components or wiring used. I want my fuse to pop before that expensive timer/relay!

    Just a thought

I'm in 100% agreement with you on that one. I was considering a 5 amp... although that may be close so may have to go with the 7.5 amp fuse. Also regarding the wire, the instructions list using 16 gauge but i will be going with 18 gauge. I'm all for overbuilding on certain things, but in reality even the 18 gauge is what is called for and is WELL within it's safety margin for this project.

Also hope that this post doesn't get misinterpreted, I think this is an awesome write up and huge respect to Benson for putting it all together.

Didn't see a tdr-mlc, just the tdr-mc. I'm assuming that is the same thing? And the relay we want is the negative (as opposed to positive).

    Thanks

From what my research tells me, the TDR-MC (negative) is what to use as shown in the schematic. I suppose you could use positive (reference the relays website for instructions) but since it was already so nicely worked out, that is the route I'll take.

I did inquire about the relay timing diagram & what was the meaning behind the small positive trigger where the relay did nothing. They said that is to represent that the trigger must be longer than the turn on delay for it to actually trigger on. If your delay is 0 (or practically 0) then it will trigger on instantly. If you want a 2 second turn on delay, the trigger has to be longer than 2 seconds...

Received my switch from AirOnBoard.com. (http://www.aironboard.com/online/pu...replacement-heated-mirrors-led-green-red.html) and physically it is exactly what I want. However, the switch is NOT schematically the same as the switch (84871-35010) shown on the schematic and will have to be modified to make it the same. It can be done, but will take some work. I may take pictures & post them as I will be modifying mine.

If you order one, (to complement the digrams on the first post) you really need a momentary switch. AirOnBoard will ship a momentary if you request it when you order it. I was told to request it on the PayPal page, but I didn't have that option & simply contacted them via email. They had no issue meeting my needs.
