Icon 3 leaf spring pack

I had added this question to an existing post and should have started new instead, so you may have seen this already.

I have a 2006 and recently installed Icon reservoir shocks & billet UCAs.

Now it's time for the rear. When I first got the truck I went the inexpensive (cheap) way and put a 1", or maybe it's a 1.5" block in the rear. Now it's time to fix that mistake.

I already have Bilstein 5100s in the back, and intend on removing the blocks. My issue is with the existing rear springs and what to do. A few years ago I had the Toyota TSB 4 leaf springs installed. Now, I'm planning to add a 3 leaf Icon progressive spring package and have to decide whether or not to remove the short leaf on the 4 leaf TSB spring pack. Am I to assume this 30" long bottom leaf is actually an overload leaf and it comes off?

Many years ago I would simply have jumped into this installation myself but now the years have taken its toll and laying on the floor fighting any unforeseen issue doesn't appeal to me. I stopped at a shop yesterday and they thought they would charge in the range of $180 to do the install. Doesn't seem out of line to me.....what do you think?

I have the 3 leaf Icon leaf pack not installed, and per the instructions you are supposed to remove the overload leaf. Some people had vibes when it was not removed and it went away after removal of it. Mine is coming off when I put the leaf pack in.

 

It depends on the current condition of your leafs. If they are too far gone, the progressive AAL pack might just be a bandaid.

 

Yeah post pics of your leafs. Might be worth it to just buy a whole new leaf pack

 

Hope this is sufficient to determine spring sag or condition. These leafs are the Toyota Tacoma TSB, installed maybe 3 years ago.

Look pretty flat to me. Unloaded?

 

Throw some Dakar's on there and be done.

 

Dakar? can you be more specific or do they make only one version. I need about 1 1/2" over stock height to remain level.

To another question - yes the spring shown is with the truck unloaded.

Dakar is a spring pack but they provide 3 inches of lift. Look at the deaver springs from wheelers, I believe they are only 1.5 inches of lift.

 

Dakar's do give 3". I think I have 7 leaves in my pack. Stout.

 

Icon AAL with stock overload removed at installation gave me 1 1/2" over stock and rides great. No more bottoming out like the stock springs by themselves. Recommend.

 

Dakars provide 2.75".

His leaf packs are shot. Buying the icons progressive packs will be a band-aid and he will be back in the same spot.

Better to just get new packs now.

I don't see it in the description, but contact Dan @ Wheeler's off-road and ask him how much lift these provide: It says you can remove the 3rd leaf for a reduced height.

 

They gave me just a hair under 3 inches

 

A couple of you said my spring packs appear to be shot. Why/how did you make that judgement? if it's possible could someone post of photo of stock springs (without AAL) - what it should look like? Or, the look of another spring pack like a Deaver installed.

A comparison would really be helpful.

The picture you posted shows the leafs looking flat/negative arch. If you have more pics or can snag one of the whole leaf pack maybe from the side of the truck I'll gladly retract my statement. Like I said maybe it's just the angle the picture was taken at.

 

I had an AAL before my Dakars and I started sagging after 3k miles..everyone is different though.

 

I've got the entire pack and they were a little stiff until I started added weight to the bed - I've got about 60 lbs of extra weight back there and the ride just gets better. I'll add that Pelfrey bumper and it might just get perfect.

 

I dont know that there is anything wrong with your leafs other than being installed by Toyota. I have had the 4 leaf TSB set for a couple of years and they were pretty much flat on the day the stealership installed them.

 

I've checked a lot of newer Tacomas, have yet to see one that has upward arching oem springs. 3 leaf, 4 leaf, doesn't matter. OEM Toyota springs are flat. They aren't the best springs, but just because they are flat does not mean they are shot.
