I mentioned before, If a company specifically designed a shallow high efficiency heat sink specifically for the side mount application, I would get another 4 20" bars for the cab. With them being side mounted, the air flow over the lights would help dissipate the heat better with more flow over the heat sink foils/ fans.

 

Ahh...so what you're saying is that even if they were held by a bracket underneath they would protrude because of the depth of the light bar itself?

 

Exactly. Take a tape measure to your rack real quick on the side. I'm making hot chocolate or else I would go do it real quick.



These are 3" deep according to the spec sheet. That would make the mounting holes for the RIGID bracket about 2.5" - 2.75" back.

also note, they have the specs on the height of the bars as 1-5/8" ... For mounting purposes, you add another 1/2" for the clearance of the mounting bracket and bolt/nut needed to hold it on the surface you intend to mount it to.

Same would apply if you wanted to mount it to the actual FrontRunner Slimline II Rack mount. You add an additional 1/2" to the overall length.

The 1/2" measurement is a little more than what is actually needed, but for arguments sake, every fraction counts on the side of the rack.

If having them protrude didn't bother you, then by all means.

 

My buddy has a CNC and said he will design and fab all my brackets for lights to fit the Frontrunner rack. I just wanted to make sure nothing would protrude outwards depth wise. And also...not look ghetto...

Nice. Just take a cardboard box, use the dimensions above and tape together a mock light bar so you can get realtime hands on and know what you are in for.

On the side measurement of the FrontRunner Slimline II Roof Rack on a DCXX 05-15 Tacoma. We have at MAX 1" all the way down to less than 1/2" from where the Mount sticks out to the side of the rack itself.

 

OK...your point proven. The depth of the lights would make them protrude extensively from the side... Gotta think of another option...lol

 

I remember when I finally was ready to put lights on the side of the cab, I was really disappointed. Thought if I had a wider rack, then the hitting my head thought process came into play. Thought about ditching the FrontRunner custom Cab Roof Mount and using some of the 'feet' they have to make it work. Even considered drilling new holes to use the feet only.

Eventually the Beam Patterns really came into play and decided it didn't matter where I mounted them for the reasons I stated a page back. Up close was going to be non beneficial and the field of view and arc on the beam was still where I needed them to be in order for them to be an effective solution for side mounting. Passengers still got the same amount of light as I had facing forward. as I glanced out the side, the spread was perfect and not overpowering from my FOV

What are the lengths of the side baja/ basket bars you have on the Rack? What is the height of the dead space between them? Following me here? You could mount LED bars on the top of your rack, under the baja bars so they still provide protection and still functional as tie down points.

If you want the longer bars to accommodate the longer LED Bars, FrontRunnerOutfitters has them too.

Looks like they are 4.4" tall. Minus an inch or more for clearance when tying down gear. I say thats a WIN right there. Have to go with 20" SR2's instead of the 30" though. Thats hoping you have the kit mentioned above. It has a clearance of ~27" length or so it claims. If you still took off 3 inches from each side for their corners and mounting hardware. The left over space should allow you to mount the 20" with the RIGID mounts to the top and it would still be recessed, protected, look good, and provide more than enough light for you.

You need 22-3/8" space to mount the 20" bar based off the dimensions above.

 

thanks man. I always work my way from the BACK pages forward. Thats always where the current information and pics are in everyones threads.

I do tend to put a lot of information out there for the masses. Just want the facts to be available to anyone that needs them. Rather steer someone in the right direction then blow them off.
