There hasn't been much forward progress in that regard since the other day, I hope to get the rear bumper wrapped up before moving on to the flatbed, at least to the point that the tail lights can go in :) doing more work on both tomorrow and Tuesday, we'll see what progress can be made, I'd love to have both mostly finished to go wheeling Saturday.

Flatbed will get fenders today, and if I'm feeling motivated, I might get it decked today. I want to get it and the bumper painted today.

Yesterday was going swimmingly, sanded the welds and edges out, mapped out and drilled the holes for tail lights, etc. Then the conundrum of how to make the latch sort out came up. The way I have the end beveled is making things interesting. But I think I have a solution that will work, it might not look as clean as I'd hoped, but with the flatbed, I don't have clearance to mount it how I want.

With the oval tail lights, I know I need a hole that's 2.5"x6.75", so I estimated the space I'd need for the gasket and functional/aesthetic clearance from the recovery tabs, and drew some lines. Once lines were there I carefully drilled pilot holes, then followed up with hole saws and the angle grinder.

I kind of hit a motivational wall this afternoon and called it a day, taking up every available day off to work on endless projects is exhausting. I realized that I couldn't paint because I need to do a relief cut and fill it back I with weld on my passenger side frame bracket due to warping. Outside of that and some final sanding to prep for paint, everything is complete on the bumper. Got the swingout fully welded together, latch on, light tabs on, etc. before I hit the wall. I also realized that I didn't have time in the day to accomplish anything major with the flatbed, certainly not with my motivation level.

    I like welding 3/8" A36 plate

Really like your build, especially that you do your own stuff.

Any way you could post shots of the front end? Interested in seeing more shots with the Iris shrouded retrofits. :D

Digging the bumper, any more pics of your spindle? I am planning to add a double shear to mine as well and looking for some ideas. I will be using 2" .25 wall DOM, a brass bushing and 1.25" bolt on the spindle, and .25" plate for the mounts with some gussets like what you have going on here. Did you end up fully capturing the bolt, or can it be removed?

That bolt ain't going anywhere... anytime... f*'in ever. In fact, I got so distracted making damn certain of that, that I forgot I needed to let the steel cool a little bit, and it's got some minor warping to it. I'm pretty sure that with paint and the spindle it won't be an issue.

My recommendation from previous experiences with oil impregnated bushings for this particular application: don't do it. This is the exact kit that I had yanked off of another project (that I lost interest in), the bracket wasn't precise enough anyway, so it was going to take a LOT of tightening to preload the bearings. Have you seen how I did the dual sheer bracket on the last bumper I did for myself and Squeaky Penguin on here? It's earlier in this thread. For that, I used this kit, lightly modifying the weld on bracket to become a bolt on bracket by way of a 1/4" thick shock mount tab from Ballistic, a 1/2" bolt, and a nut welded onto the shock tab. It worked well, and allowed for both complete removal of the entire swingout assembly, as well as adjustable preload of the bearings - the latter being somthing that a permanent dual sheer bracket doesn't allow for, and as the bearings wear, will cause problems... just like a bike's hubs or headset, angular contact bearings need adjustability to function properly without bind and without excess play/wiggle.

From what I've noticed, I've found that it's absolutely key to make sure everything around the hinge is rock solid. When you think you've stiffened it up enough, brace it some more, it'll wanna flex. Box Rocket's rear bumper is really dialed in how the vertically aligned rectangular tube supports the load from the hinge.

Basically, I can't recommend the bearing hinge enough, it's sooooo much smoother and nicer than bushings. I wish I had gone that route on my first bumper I made on my Jeep.

    In other news....

I know I haven't been very active on here lately, I hit an extreme motivational plateau with the project. In fact, today one of my customers was talking about a project he's planning for a flatbed similar to Smkytxn's, and after my dumb week, it's been marinating for me, so I might be bailing on the M416 style box and going strictly flatbed - especially after contemplating the manner in which I would store things within the wood box, it wouldn't really change much if I did a proper flatbed...

So there's that. It'd make my life a lot easier, the fenders have been giving me a fair amount of trouble from a logistics standpoint, trying to make the whole thing work like I was thinking.

I'm just kind of reaching a point of having been so busy with day job, replacing cab, holidays, then right back at a major project, followed by building a website... #overit.

The flatbed sounds sick to me. Not to hate on the M416 idea but SMKTYTXN's flatbed has clean lines that would look good on a DD.

 on whatever you decide. Still enjoying this build.

I was actually able to reuse the box... just chopped the top off of it. I came down to my parents' house yesterday after working all week to find my dad had gotten a head start on bedlining it. Huge amount of work the might have to happen today knocked out already, just have to topcoat with Al's Liner.

Test fit before paint. Good thing I checked...because the pop pin doesn't have clearance between the bearing housing and the bed frame... Oh well. I'll probably put a gas strut on someday.

    57116e7a9e0bf4256aedac57a0f81729_27c30d7e36eef6446bbc38740571134bf1f25001.jpg

Now to lay one final bead on this bad boy, chop off the pop pin housing and paint. Bed should be completed today as far as steel goes, but I realized it's a bit unrealistic to try and get the top deck mounted and finished today, I think reality will simply look like finishing the metal ( \m/ ), priming and getting a few sealing coats of flat black on the inside surfaces. The deck finishing will take a few days I expect.
