I am considering doing the Tundra brake upgrade to my Tacoma. I would like to have more stopping power when towing and am tired of my rotors warping.

I have a few questions for those that have already done it.To those who have done this do you wheel your Tacoma? Have you seen any issues when wheeling?

I understand it is an upgrade and is an improvement when towing, but the more I wheel, the more advanced trails I try. I don't want to have any brake issues when I am in the middle of climbing up or going down one of those trails when I need them the most. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I'd be less concerned about the trails than brake bias in the winter. Granted, I know little on the subject but if you have more braking on your front you could swing your ass-end around on the ice.

I didn't have any issues when wheeling mine. I'm not sure what issues you would have. They didn't fade after 8 hours of use.

Fading/failing was my biggest thoughts. I have read much of the info on doing this, so I know the Taco master cylinder can handle the upgrade, but that you have to keep an eye on the fluid when the pads are wearing down. I would just like to hear from some folks who have done it and how it has handled some serious wheeling.

    Intake, exhaust, lift. Typical stuff.
Costs are around $300-$500 depending on if you buy new parts or used parts. I got my calipers from a wrecked 06 Sequoia (same as Tundra) and got the pads and rotors new. The bolt holes on my calipers were thinner than the stock calipers so the bolts were too long and bottomed out before coming in contact with the calipers. I used a think grade 8 washer and fixed that issue. Other than that and trimming the dust shield to fit the bigger calipers, it was pretty much bolt on.

What are you towing? Why not install trailer brake?

i've been running 231mm Tundra brakes for 15 months now without issue... Towing, light offroading, trips to the mountains for skiing/snowboarding, etc., no problems!

it's nice having the larger brakes for stopping larger/heavier than stock tires and an "armored" truck even when NOT towing.

I am in the process of armoring my Taco(full skids and heavy sliders...maybe a winch). Just running 265/75R16s. I have a 17' Lowe Fish and Ski. Boat, motor and trailer are around 2600 to 2700 lbs (that may be on low side) It's on a single axle trailer. Not sure I can add brakes to to it, but it is not the only thing I pull. I figured it would be better to put the larger calipers on my truck. My only concerns was making sure they hold on moderate to hard wheeling. I guess if they hold when towing, then they should hold when wheeling.

I really don't know anything about tundra swap. I do know my response was legit. I hauled 20 ft montery I/0 for 4-5 yrs without upgrades. 2.7 5 speed. The truck didn't like it but, I learned to slow down before stopping. Never one issue with warped rotors. Were they oem?. I don't remember the weight but had to be a lot more than what you are talking about. Maybe the tundra thing will work, your truck weight vs trailer weight won't change. It is energy against you!

Did the 231mm Tundra brake upgrade (S13WL caliper) in January and then drove 9200 miles on a 2 month ski trip across the country. Zero issues and I say definitely worth it. I bought the calipers from Advance Auto but the rotors and pads from Toyota. I also bought stainless steel lines from Wheeler's Offroad, which came with new banjo bolts and made the entire install bolt on, other than having to cut about 1 sq inch of material off each dust cover.

Had my truck for about a year now, brakes are still good but considered this mod long ago when a friend with a 97 4runner told me about. Sounds like the it's the way to go, however for those of you who have done the mod, how has your stock tacoma master cylinder held up?

Did this mod to my taco and my 3rd gen 4runner. Best upgrade for the buck imo. I tow a small camper and atv's/trailer so this upgrade was a must for me.

That looks like quite a nice difference. What size wheels are you guys running with those calipers? Or is it not big enough to interfere?
