ABS on this truck is dangerous...

I'm merely speculating, but I would bet money that I'm right. The trucks are consistently designed and manufactured. They are all very much the same. It stands to reason that the brakes are all the same too.

I'm not about to make a formal claim with Toyota or with any other organization. Ain't got time fo dat yo.

I'm aware of the issue, I've adjusted my driving style accordingly.

Winter is almost over here, and my truck will be gone the minute that the 2016's hit the lots. Maybe the issue won't reappear in the new trucks. If it does, I'll adjust again.

 

I think I've stated this before, but with new tires a week ago, added weight in the bed and whatnot. The best thing I can do to 'fix' the ABS issues that I seem to have, is to shift my automatic trans into N if I think I'm going to start to slide. I can feel a drastic difference in the rear 'pushing' me through the stop when I'm sliding in gear vs. stopping more quickly in N.

It's a trick that I learned when driving old beat up '86 pickups in High School and it still works today.

 

And there lies the problem, this thread shows what would happen if you filed a complaint with anyone. Responses like black ice, you where driving to fast, that's how its suppose to act. Some things I've wondered, is there a mph that abs in not active, i.e. 2-3 or more mph, and what happens in the system when no traction is detected on any wheel? All in all I think the brake system is flat out awesome on dry/wet conditions and is probably why it sucks on snow/ice/mud and dirt.

 

Well, I guess someone needs to start this off, so I will gladly complain to the dealership. I'll report back with their response.

 

And the NTSB.... They are the ones to make things happen....

If a few thousand Tacoma owners fill these out, Toyota would have to at least look into the issue.
But filing a bunch of reports and maybe a few letters to our congresscritters might stimulate a closer look.
Esp now with GM and Takata going on.

A component which work fine in 62 different models goes nuts when installed in the Puddlejumper 1500XLT, and the answer is buried somewhere in a 100 million lines of code.

 

I live on 5 kilometers of dirt road, it has lots of hills and this time of year it is always covered in snow or ice (test track) yesterday I drove the road with ABS enabled I attempted emergency stops on different sections of the road, on hills and on level. The ABS does exactly as it was designed to do, at no time did I get slide ways, did it stop the truck "NO" I then pulled the fuse for ABS and drove the same road. I was able to stop the truck in shorter distances than I took with ABS enabled. I won't be reinstalling the fuse, I understand that this testing was subjective to my interpation of the braking distances.I have been driving for 40+ years. I slid off this road a month ago, did at least $1000.00 damage, the tree is doing fine it will make a full recovery. No big deal that's just plastic and metal, could have been a person instead of a tree. I will contact Toyota Canada and make a formal complaint. There should be a way to approach Toyota as a group, that would carry more weight than everyone making an individual complaint. has anyone checked other forums? I will try later today.i know some are going to adjust your driving style and that would work but I paid a lot of coin for this truck I think it should perform better than this !!!! My RANT. With 88 pages in this thread, and apparently 390+ threads with "ABS" in their title, I'm not about to get fully up to speed on this one.

But, I ask:

Are these ABS complaints Tacoma specific, or just general to ABS? Are people complaining on PriusWorld forums, too?

Obviously an ABS system is a compromise. Less braking power (on loose surfaces), in favor of more braking power (on smooth surfaces) while maintaining steering.

I'm not interested in compromise, I drive on what you call (loose conditions) about three months a year! I can adjust my driving to help some, i can't adjust for the unplanned emergency stops. That's what scares me.

 

Tacoma specific.

I've had ABS in other vehicles and while I'm still not really a fan it doesn't seem so detrimental. Many, many times with my 2007 Tacoma I had the brakes practically just stop working because a wheel tried to lock up for a moment. It just feels like 95% of your braking power is cut to all wheels when it happens. My other vehicles don't feel that way at all when the ABS kicks in.

They can help if you have an issue and can't get an a dealer or manufacturer to deal with it. There must be something similar south of the border.

 

So there I was, on a Saturday night, driving down a lone strech of highway. Out of my right eye I see an object on the side of the road. It seems to be waddling its way right out onto the highway. I press my brakes and I get nothing. As its been snowing for hours at this point, I think to myself, it must be these damn Tacoma ABS brakes not working in the snow. I slide over what ever the obstrucion was in the road, right into the median. I get out and find a penguin, completely untouched. I pick up the little fella and go back to my truck. Behind me I see another Tacoma which seems to have met the same fate due to the faulty ABS brakes. In it is a beautiful woman name Sila. That woman became my wife, and if it werent for the brakes, it never would have happened.

Still can't find the answers to any cut off speed and what the systems does when no wheel has traction. I too have tried multiple times to make it act up with no success, it tends to lye in wait for that perfect moment. I did read that many offroaders pull the fuse in all vehicles equipped with abs and found some threads on other 4x4 toyotas with the same symptoms.

 

All the times I've had the braking issue happen to me were under 10 MPH and light braking. I've tried recreating the problem many times and the only way I can purposefully get it to brake poorly is to lightly hit the brakes while going slow. If I slam on the brakes the ABS pulses like it should and I stop fine but when lightly braking it will just do its non-braking coasting nonsense with no ABS pulsing. I've never had another ABS car behave like this

 

KB Voodoo, you Sir, are EXACTLY correct in your statement. All those tacomas down south won't ever experience the issue. It's us Northerners or guys who are running trucks in cold snowy climates that are at risk of ABS causing a fatal or catastrophic accident. I pull my fuse anytime one of my family members is going to drive my truck in the snow because the ABS is just taht dangerous. I warn them before hand that the truck no longer has ABS but its safer than the stock alternative. You people who don't experience it aren't spending much time in inclimate winter weather conditions. I experience a possible dangerious ABS condition nearly ever single time I have driven my truck in bad winter weather. I am a professional Class A CDL driver, with doubles, triples tankers and hazmat. I drive a Kenworth T800 every single day. These Tacoma's ABS is a death sentence.

 

I just filled out the form. It only takes a few minutes. Maybe they'll investigate the issue if everyone else on this thread fills it out too.

 

Exactly my issue. NO pulsing. NO brakes. Not at all . Tacoma was just coasting. It's isn't even slowing down!
