15 yr retirement if you have a good job, would be great.

What they were doing, was giving a lump sum instead of retirement. You would have to invest that for your retirement. Not sure what they are doing now....

That lump sum deal could be good, too, if you had a good job lined up.

They were offering anyone over 15 retirement this past year. And a lump sum. I think it was 40% and a percentage of your base pay times the amount of years times something else... I knew some guys getting 80k along with 40% retirement.

Even if it isn't done, I have the GI Bill to finish. I was thinking of giving Erica a year to get her BSN, but she keeps telling me she doesn't care.. :(

why you so stingy with the cookies? :pout:

My opinion, unless it is a very good, high paying job, the lump sum deal never made a lot of sense to me. I know a few folks who took it and regretted it afterwards. I worked with one of them for a while. I didn't know it at the time, but when the discussion came up and i mentioned how I had passed on it and didn't see how it made any sense, her exact words were, "where the hell were you when I was making that stupid decision?" Little bit of regret there.

Point is, get your retirement, either 15 or 20. Especially in this day and age, with all the uncertainties out there, what a contractor or company offers you this year, they may not be able to maintain for the long run. One never knows for sure.

I'll let this rest now. Sorry for going on so.

I've been tempted to take the 15 year redux as well if I decide the 20 year route. But, if I do that, I will stay in until 24-25 (I should easily be E-8 by that point) to make up for the 10% loss doing the redux.

 silly girl!!! She could do so much better with one....

Never heard from anyone who took it. after they left. If you get retirement and the lump sum, as long as you don't blow it - like I think most folks did, you could be better off in the long run, but :notsure:

I agree. I think retirement plus lump sum is an absolute no brainer, even if one decides to blow the lump sum ... Not that I would, only 'cuz Kristi would whoop me

Folks I'm talking about it was just the lump sum. And few that took it were wise enough to invest it. Back then it was less money too, IIRC it was like $35K lump sum. (period) I never understood how folks thought that was a good idea.

Tax time sucks when you're single, make decent money and don't own any property.
