Yep. Could do the SWR without a group since they have required guides anyways. That said a group is always more fun.

Just depends. Definitely wheeling Saturday though somewhere. Will know more at the beginning of the week.

 

Where did you ground your antenna? Mine is almost in the same location, but I need a better ground.

Also, any pics of your bumpstops?

 

It's grounded to the rail for ground plane as well as to the frame at the factory ground point above the shock mount.

I'll have to grab a pic of the bump stops...they are quite large.

 

Beach meet and run today at Bryan Beach. No good action shots yet, but I think some were taken.

Finished installing the ARB Locker this morning. Took from 10am yesterday until 6pm, then another couple hours this morning to finish up. That said, the worst part was the damn drum brakes

Diff set-up went well (I should have taken more pictures of the final third member assembly). We got 0.0065 backlash which was the same as found (0.006-0.010 is the factory spec). Couple of methods we used in the install that worked well:

Tear down: (GEARING WAS NOT CHANGED SO THE PINION WAS NOT REMOVED)

• Just come to peace with taking the drum brakes apart. We couldn't figure out a better way to detach the e-brake cable than this. There is a good exploded view somewhere on tacoworld or you can take pictures before disassembly. I also ended up with ALOT of fluid coming out of the brake system, so make sure to have plenty on hand to bleed them well after reassembly.
• Before removing any rotating or flanged component, draw an alignment mark with a paint marker to ensure you assemble things in the same orientation.
• Ring gear bolts have Loctite from the factory...I impacted them off with a 150ftlb DeWalt
• The Ring gear is a shrink fit onto the old diff, so if you are re-using the factory gears like I was, you have to carefully remove it. I did this by a combination of tapping on four bolts across the ring then once out of length, I used a 1/4 ratchet extender to keep tapping it down in a star pattern, careful not to distort the ring gear
• All keeper parts that were removed (ring gear bolts and ring gear) were cleaned with brake cleaner and allowed to dry
• Internal surfaces of the third were cleaned and then protected with new shop towels to prevent any particles from entering the pinion bearing

Assembly:

• The ring gear was heated in my gas grill on a low setting to about 200F, it fell right into place and the holes were aligned while hot. Once it cools it is like a pressed on fit. Couldn't figure out a great way to hold the dang thing still outside of the third member, so only torqued to 20ftlb before installing in the third member.
• Also, had several colors of paint marker on hand for multi-torque bolts. Marked position of all external bolts as well after torqueing for easy visual checking.
• Bearings were "pressed" on by using a plastic face hammer on a small section of 2" aluminum pipe. Size was perfect. Drive them to the shoulder.
• We measured the
  $1,110 ARB RD129 Air Locking Differential
  ARB RD129 to be essentially the same size as the factory carrier so first shim attempt was same as found. Needed a little bit more preload so with feeler gauge determined that 0.010 was the right amount. This shimming was done on the ring gear side.
• Got lucky and on the first try backlash was same as found - 0.0065 checked in three locations.
• This was the stage where we carefully drilled the hole in the bearing cap and the hole for the bulkhead fitting in the third member. Very careful to remove all machining particles - used vacuum while drilling through the third member to immediately full out the particles in addition to the rags stuffed in earlier to protect the pinion bearing and its upper oil passage. Test fit the air fitting and ran down the 1/4 NPT pipe tap to get good thread engagement on the taper.
• After torqueing down the cap bolts to their 70ftlb spec, backlash was checked once more and confirmed at 0.0065 with good preload on the carrier.
• Proceeded to torque the ring gear bolts in two more steps (50ftlb and then 70ftlb) by jamming the pinion drive flange with a punch against the case and had the third member in the vice by the bearing cap brace. This was somewhat sketchy but got the job done.
• Rest of reassembly essentially reverse of tear down (prepare gasket surface, mount third member, low torque then full torque the bolts to properly form the gasket, replace axle shaft and bearing assemblies, rebuild drum brakes, wait overnight for RTV to cure, then refill oil, bleed brakes, reinstall wheels)

Went to Long's Ranch in Llano, TX this past weekend with a few folks for some wheeling and camping. That place was about the most sketch off-road park I have been to so far, complete with variable pricing depending on who you were and when you arrived. On the upside, due to the lack of other customers it was like having our own place. Had a nice place to set up camp on the side of the Llano River. Here are a few choice pics:

Got in my new Armor Tech Offroad transfer case skid to match my other two ATO skids. Prepped the bare steel with wire wheel and wire brush around the welds and 80 grit on the orbital in the flat areas. Sprayed two coats of Rust Oleum automotive enamel gloss black in the hot sun on a 94 deg day...so not the glossiest finish, but its a skid so that wont matter at all. The paints really just for corrosion protection.

Exhaust reroute hopefully to come this week before Trees Ranch so I can get this puppy on.
