What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

Where did you get color matched parts?

 

Last Sunday while wheeling I noticed that I bent the shit out of the license plate holder that I had...shitty idea for it to stick out so much. A lil redneck engineering and I was able to straighten it back out by backing into a big ass boulder

I ordered a flip up license plate bracket from Summit. Gonna install it this weekend. Any tips on drilling into my plate bumper? Thinking of drilling holes, then use self tapping screws??? (only need 2 holes)

Just talked to my dad who is a welder...he said I should have no problem just using the self tapping screws. no need to drill first.

only reason I was thinking that was cuz when I did my transfer skid plate, the self tapping screws were not penetrating through the frame. We had to drill holes then use the screws

thanks. i also think if you can't weld it, you should just drill holes and use a bolt/nut instead of self tap screws if you can. Not a big fan of self taping screws especially when the metal is that thick.. or maybe you can just pre drill a hole and use the self tapping screws like your post above ^

 

I use self tappers on mine and they will go right through mild steel. A 5/16" diameter will be perfect. I wouldn't weld that on because they aren't the highest grade part. You might bend it one day and want another. Or get sick of it or something.

 

Replaced the intake tube because the old one split where it connects to the throttle body

 

I'd suggest drilling small holes. Like..1/16" or something. It'll make it easier and the likelihood of breaking off the screw will be less. And it'll go straight for sure.

 

I don't think I could do that unless I use a long bolt and drill all the way through to the backside right?

Thanks Ryan, I had a hell of a time getting my transfer skid on the frame..but I'm sure the frame is pretty damn thick??

btw, I got to use that diff diaper last weekend...Well made sir!! I dragged that bitch over all sorts of rocks

The frame is a different grade of most likely cold rolled steel that is a hell of a lot harder than regular old hot rolled bumper grade steel. It is only 0.095" thick, but the machinability factor is much different. Self drilling screws will blow through 1/4" hot rolled plate no problem. And if used correctly can take a great amount of strain.

Securing hilift... I want to have easier access than using a socket. So wing nuts are the first fix that comes to mind, but I'm worried they will rattle loose. Is this an unfounded worry or is there a better way to do this?

My first run with the SC installed. Keep in mind... 37" tires, steel beadlock wheels, heavy axles... truck weighs #4600. OLD AND TIRED 4 cyl haha.

Then I went back today to get 5% on rear doors and back glass






Gonna go back soon and get the front windows matched with the 5% and gonna put tint on the whole windshield
