Hi, I have 2008 Toyota Tacoma 2.7l 5 spd. I love my truck and it is taken me to so much fun over the years. My tuck has transported me to hundreds of days of skiing in Colorado and all kinds of fun in the mountains.
my truck has 97000 miles on it.

about a month ago I noticed a weird grinding sound after completing a gear change from first to second. When the noise happened my foot was not engaged on the clutch but on the gas pedal. I was due for my 90k maintenance so I took it in and the shop said it was the syncros. I have a power train warranty so I took it to the dealer and they said it was the clutch, I then took my truck to a transmission specialist who also said it was the clutch, the dealer was willing to give me a good deal on the clutch so I got it replaced.

I got my truck back and the first shift I made my truck made a grinding noise as soon as I completed the gear change.

Any ideas on this? I ve read a few threads on this forum with people who have had issues with throwout bearing and I was also thinking it could be a the pilot bearing, or maybe a U joint. the noise will happen in mostly second and third gears and only when accelerating with my foot on the gas pedal

    Thanks

If the noise is AFTER a gear change and the clutch is fully engaged it isn't the syncros. It could be something else in the transmission.

It sounds like it happens under a load, the first thing I would check is the Universal Joints. I would also take it back to the dealer who said you needed a clutch and show them the issue is not yet gone. They may give you a break on fixing the real issue since they have already screwed you.

Does anyone have an update on what this ended up being? I have an 08 Tacoma doing the same thing and have an appointment this coming Saturday morning. I would like to know a little more about the problem before they call me back and tell me its the clutch.
