Buying a 2000 Tacoma but paying over KBB?

Estimate $2,000 over KBB in California, if it's a clean title in good condition.

 

I sold my 01 xtra cab 4cyl 5speed 4x4 with 205k for 8500 last Month ...

 

check all the front end, you can replace everything there for like $200 so if you are not sure just put it all new just to be sure and forget about it for another 100k miles.

change all the oils and fluids to synthetics for getting the best life out of it and ignore those who say it might cause leaks. it will only leak if you already have a leak and gunk is blocking it over time from leaking out unnoticed.

check u-joints for play and check your shocks and struts for softness or leaks/busted bushings.

check rack and pinion bushings for tightness and cracked rubber.

check frame for hidden frame rust in the rear, mainly around the leaf spring brackets.

flush and replace power steering fluid (use synthetic)

flush and replace brake fluid (use regular DOT 3 rated stuff)

pull wheels and check all brake pads and rotors and regrease the bearings

 

Hand up, also paid around $1000k over KBB. There's just not a lot around, and if I wanted one I had to jump on it and be willing to pay. Seems like it's worth it for the reliability of a good truck though.

Sorry guys but I had to laugh a little bit at you guys paying one or two G's over KBB! Try and buy a decent used taco out here in the 808...kbb value has no place in negotiating price. There's guys buying tacos with close to 200k for 10G and up. Seems like 4-6 g over kbb is the norm...not the exception. Toyota is the number one brand for vehicles out here and rightfully so. One of the perks of living on the mainland...cheaper tacos

 

Just bought a 2000 Reg cab 5spd 4x4 with 169k on it for 7500. The guy had 4 other people in line to look at it after me, so I didn't want to take the chance.

Here it depends on rc ac or dc. Plenty of rc with 100-130k going for 5-6 grand ac being 1-2k more

 

The reg cab 4x4's seem to be rare here in so cal. Gazillions of extra cab and dc, 95% of them being prrerunners. Looked for weeks for a reg cab 4x4, and they were being snatched up left and right.

 

Ok so here is my truck I bought. The paint is pretty dull and no longer glossy but it doesn't look that bad. The truck came with a Leer camper shell that I sold on craigslist since I need full access to the bed. Seller listed it at $7300, KBB value was $5400 and I bought it for $6250. I also sold the camper shell for $700 so actually paid $6250-700= $5550.

The truck has 101k miles and I have all the records for oil changes etc. I am thinking I might do a Seafoam treatment to it just to clean in out a bit since the idle is sometimes rough and vibrates the cab, it also feels a bit sluggish when giving it throttle. Maybe a throttle body cleaning as well?

 

looks great and the price sounds great.

that rough idle thing we all have with the 4 cylinders, not sure why but they always idle more roughly then you would think it should so you may just have to learn to get used to that little "quirt" in these engines.

Thanks keakar! It looks like there might be an alarm on it too but the owner said there wasn't. Look at the engine bay it has a siren.

Since I've just went through this... I went ahead and changed my engine & tranny mounts and now my vibration that occurred at idle & more so while in drive w/ AC on is gone.

The transmission mount I changed because the shifter was floating around more than I liked when stopping/going. Buy the toyota transmission mount if you replace it. The Toyota transmission mount has more room for "floating" than the aftermarket mounts (I know, since I just bought both...)

The engine mounts fixed my vibration. I simply got the Autozone Duralast mounts & they worked fine. My old mounts had cracks where the rubber meets the metal plates.

 

I would suggest to "check" fluids first, no need to replace them all (basically an overhaul) if they are still good. Hell my PS fluid has never been changed and I have 132k on the clock, can still see through it, brake fluid the same

If you mean that thing on the right it's your vacuum pump

 

If you look right behind the throttle body its mounted on the firewall facing down. It's definitely a siren and has wire going through the firewall to the cab. I plan to poke around under the hood tonight when the kids go to sleep.

First mod I'm doing is installing a pair of my HID's that I sell. These halogens have GOT to go lol.

 

I knew there was some sort of alarm system! Doesn't look it has any labeling or branding so it is probably some cheapy. When I discovered the alarm I found 2 plugs that were not plugged in.. Does anyone know if these are important or suppose to be disconnected??

 

The two conductor plug is not plugged in on my truck (2000 Prerunner 2.7l).

I don't know what the other connector is.
