How often you guys change your Oil

I do it twice a year... the truck mostly spends its time in the garage so if I get 4-5K miles a year I am driving it a lot.

yeah i will check at 4k miles and probably just change at 5 and see how that goes. I won't be horsing the truck around or anything. Truck has plenty of power and speed so no need to drive it like i drive my mustang and even with the stang I don't kill it but I keep it blown out every now and then. I have 3 vehicles now so have to show all of them some love. The 92 s 10 I am working out some issues with it and as soon as i get it running better i will probably drive it to work at least twice maybe 3 times a week and drive the toyo a few times, maybe the stang once to work. All in all one of them which more than likely will be the stang, might only get driven once a week and the Toyo maybe 2-3 times at least and if driven that much during the week especially in summer cause the s 10 doesnt have air..............Well lets just say i can see driving the Toyo easily 3-4 days out of the entire week. The stang and the Toyo is the weekend drivers definitely also

I got 3k miles on Dino, then I'll start getting oil and a filter. End up around 4k miles.

On synthetic I'll go 4-5k then same routine.

I'll also judge it by the dipstick. If it's looking bad, I'll change it.

Anything wrong with 10W-30?

 

Hard running a good tight motor (that isn't built to be on the ragged edge) is not particularly harmful as long as it's at operating temp before flogging it, the cooling system is well serviced and the lubrication program is good.

My last street driven race car (stock motor) saw the rev limiter a few times a week (over 7k) and never wimpered. Also only consumed about 1qt over a 10k interval, compression was high and even on all cylinders.

One thing to keep in mind is 'short cycling'. If you drive a vehicle lots of short trips and heavy city use, you should consider that 'severe duty' in terms of maintenance issues. It's just as hard on everything as towing or other strenuous conditions. Even then, lab testing is the only way to really know what's needed.

The easiest is long interstate cruising. It wears almost nothing except tires, and even they will last more miles than normal. Quite boring, but don't let that type mileage worry you. Steady state temps, RPMs etc. create a great environment. The only reason you see broken down cars roadside on the interstate is that they have either not been properly maintained, tangled with debris or just had an unfortunate electronic failure (although that's fairly rare)

On of our past 'family fleet' was a '99 Camry, the ones with the infamous oil sludging will lunch your motor issue. 5k changes with good dino oil and Purolator filters got it to 150k before we sold it. Last I saw it it was well over 200k, no sludging issues.

5-6k on my toyotas with wal mart 5/30 synthetic and purolator filters.
4k on my wrx with rotella t6 and purolator
1k on my motard with regular rotella
Once a season on my harley with dino oil and a wix filter
My sentra gets a once a year oil/filter change (uses about a quart a month).

 

Mobil 1, 5w30, Toyota filter usually twice a year. I don't put a ton of miles on my truck and I rarely meet the mileage increments before I tell myself its time to change the oil.

 

Every 6-8,000 km

 

Meh 1-2 times a year.. whenever it looks like tar really.

 

Very impressed at the lack of flaming on this thread. Some vehicle forums would never get 2 pages in without someone's mother being threatened over something as varied and opinionated as oil changes.

 

5k w/ Mobil1 0w-30 synthetic.

Except this time. I'm up to about 7k on Mobil1 5w-30 Extended Performance synthetic with the larger Mobil1 filter (can't remember the number). It's going to wait until spring. Given the guy with almost 400k did many intervals longer than 5k, I don't think I have anything to worry about.

Rotella 5w-40

 

Every 5k I change it myself with Mobil 1.

 

Every 5K miles.

 

Every 3k with synthetic blend 5w30 and oem toyota filter

 

Wait... you're supposed to change the filter?

Hmm its so hard to get to i figured it was good for 100k or so.

 

There's nothing "wrong" with it, but it's more viscous than our engines require, meaning it won't flow as well at cold temps and will rob both power and mileage.
