About a week ago I sold my 2007 and bought a 2015. Today the roads were covered in snow and I experimented a few times with the braking/ABS. In my new Tacoma I'm not experiencing the same effect that I saw in my 2007. It's much, much better now.

Hmmm... wonder what changed? I have a 2011 and I haven't had any trouble. I don't know if its me being cautious from reading these threads or what. We had 10 inches of snow on top of ice a couple of weeks ago and I could not get ABS to give me trouble like the others are posting. Maybe I drive too slow. :notsure::notsure::notsure:

You can definitely control it by braking earlier and slowing down.

The phenomenon occurs (for me at least) when you might be going a little faster, and braking hard.

When that happens, truck feels like there is no braking being applied at all, even though your foot is mashed into the pedal. It just coasts freely, and you can hear the ABS clicking away like mad.

Then a little poo comes out.

"Too fast" is a relative term.

It wouldn't be "too fast" for most trucks, but for this one, "not very fast", can be "too fast" if there's snow on the ground.

I've totally adjusted the way I brake, so it hasn't been an issue since earlier this winter.

But if there was a need for an emergency stop, it just ain't gonna happen. I'll coast right into whatever I was trying to avoid.

    Then poo would come out.

    hm,
My 2010 I haven't had much of a problem with the ABS, especially since I got rid of those crappy Dunlop Granfails. You do all realize that the ABS is designed to keep you in control of the vehicle (means you can still steer), not stop quicker. My KTM Super Duke bike has two ratings for stopping, the ABS stop distance is longer then the non ABS one, but you never loose control of the bike if you hammer the brakes. Non ABS vehicles will go into a skid if you hammer the brakes in slick conditions and you have no control of steering the vehicle when it is in a skid condition.

Yes we do realize that, it's been mentioned many times in this very thread. The problem is that the stopping distance when this issue happens is way longer than normal, sometimes like 3x longer or more. Even when reported by people who have owned mutiple other ABS equipped vehicles and also reported by some professional drivers. What's the difference in your KTM bike's ABS and non ABS stop distance rating? I'm betting the difference isn't double or triple between the two.

It also happens at very low speeds, like 5mph where almost any brake pressure should cause an immediate stop and the risk of getting sideways is slim.

How, many of you guys are driving automatics? Because you can also get into a condition when in 2 wheel drive where the rear power pushes the front end when in gear. This happens because the front brakes are most of your braking power, but in slick conditions it is counter intuitive because the ABS will activate first on the front rather than the rear and gets into a bad situation quick unless you release the brakes. The solution is to put your vehicle in neural when stopping or in 4 wheel drive.

Mine is an automatic, and it's always in 4x4 when the roads are slippery.

I suggest Tacoma owners with ABS issues install a boat anchor on a short length of 10,000 lbs chain. Nothing computerized about throwing that sucker out behind you on Gravel or Snowy roads.

Barring that you could always cut a hole in the bottom of your cab and stop Fred Flinstone style. That way you can threshold brake with perfect feedback from the soles of your feet. I'd recommend attaching some old winter tire tread to the bottom of your boots to help prevent injury.

Use both stopping methods at your own risk.

Important point here: The 2007 was a SR5, the 2015 is a TRD OR. So besides the model year difference we also know the entire ABS system and brake booster is different because this time around you have a TRD OR. (As noted earlier in this thread the OR is an entirely different ABS from all other models).

Be sure to come back to this thread (even if it is next year) and let us know if you ever do experience a similar problem with your 2015 TRD OR. Sounds like so far you are pretty sure it is acting better/different.

I can't comment about 2015's but my 2014 TRD OR has the braking problems indicated in this thread.

And my 2014 TRD OR doesn't (or at least hasn't yet). Shrugs.

I wonder this my self. My truck is manual and I have never experienced the excessive stopping distance issue with mine, even compared to my other vehicles, (Civic SI, Prelude, Legacy Spec.b, Durango, Silverado) Now I don't drive in Canadian snow but I do drive in New York snow, which is 4-5 months of inclement weather.

That being said, I was at work talking to a co-worker who drives an 07 SR5 automatic, she said she has experienced it. So 2 weeks ago after we had an early dismissal, and the parking lot was covered in snow and empty, we commenced a brake off.

Under both full and partial breaking from 15MPH her truck needed 8-15 more feet to stop. She has Silent Armors I have Duratracs, hers is a 07 SR5 mine is an 11 OR so that may also be a factor.

Maybe it has to do something with the Torque converter being locked up and keeping the wheels loaded?

The difference you describe is probably solely from the tires.

Nope, my '07 was a manual and it was terrible.

My '15 is an auto and I'm not noticing the same issue at all so far, but I've only had it a week and a half.
