Should I Rust Spray Now, Or Later?

    Hi All,

I just picked up a 2007 Toyota Tacoma. It has roughly 88,000km on it, and was owned by Toyota as a service vehicle. The underside of the vehicle has never been undercoated as far as I can tell. I am uncertain as to whether or not the frame was ever replaced under warranty. Living in snowy, salty Canada, I am looking at getting the vehicle undercoated. I am curious though as to whether that will affect my ability to apply for a frame recall should I ever need it? Once the vehicle has been sprayed, how difficult will it be for me to tell if I'm having significant corrosion issues such that the frame will need to be addressed? I am in the process of checking with Toyota to see if the frame was ever swapped, although in the mean time I figured I would ask here for some input as well.

    Thanks in advance!

    John

Get under that truck and start testing with a hammer. Just tap the frame at different places and see hkw sound it is. That's what I would do

Ya I was thinking about that. Do you think that the remainder of the winter and salt on the road will do any significant damage? I have sprayed my vehicles almost annually in the past, so I really don't know what one winter's worth of driving unprotected would lead to.

    Hose the frame down regularly.

I wouldnt do a undercoat that is like a liner.

You should check out formula 3000 or fluid film. Easy to apply yourself.

    Krown undercoat. Forget the rest.

What state did your Tacoma originally come from? A lot of states are ineligible for the frame recall (at the moment) including where mine came from - Florida. I would go ahead and undercoat the livingshitoutofit. I have been able to keep my '05 in pretty good shape by having several professional applications of Krown Rust Control and getting under there several times a year with a few cans of Rust Check. Don't be cheap with that stuff in hopes of maybe someday getting a new frame - that's not a gamble I'm willing to take myself.

Ya Krown is what I would be using, for sure.

I'm up in Ontario, Canada. Vehicle came from here.

I was always going to undercoat it. It was just whether or not I undercoat it right now and just stick with it for the long haul, or see if I'm currently (or almost) eligible for a new frame due to existing rust conditions and then undercoat the new frame after repair. I just didn't want to Krown a frame that was potentially eligible for a replacement only to have the undercoat cover up the potentially already existing problems.
