hello everyone, im new and im stumped as to an issue that recently popped up with my
08 tacoma- I bought this Toyota new in the latter part of 07 and have had no problems with it whatsoever up until last week. so i live in ohio and i went out early in the morning and it was -8 cranked the engine for a few seconds wouldn't start tried once more, fired right up, thinking nothing of it, I drove it to work. after my shift i came out and truck would turn over but not start.so i dolly it home put it in the barn heat it up real good, still wont run. put it on a battery charger for a couple days, come out - fires right up! pull it out filler up do an oil change try it a couple more times- and so i drive it to work the next day - come out after my shift , cranks like crazy but wont start. pull the fuel fitting up front turn the key, no fuel - fuel pump. makes sense cool , so i do the job in my barn and guess what, no start, no spark, no fuel, cranks like crazy but will not do anything here is a list of things ive tried.
    1. fuel pump
    2. checked every fuse and swapped relays
3.looked for crispy wires behind glove box
    4. squirted ether in top of throttle body while my son was cranking the engine (nothing)
5.checked my grounds and checked for corrosion in all my sensor plugs
    6. did the briggs and Stratton spark plug test (no spark)
honestly it seem like it aint getting fuel or spark and im completely lost and don't even know where to start..... help please:confused:

    Reserected from the dead.
Try a different key. Could be an immobilizer issue.

So which is it- no fuel or no spark? Or, both? After replacing the pump you still had no fuel coming from the tank?

Immobilizer.... Good thought. When you get into the car, does the security light stay on when you try to start the car? Did you try a different key?

    Check the starter?

I had on old jeep and an old toyota that had starters go bad and did the same things you're explaining.

Ended up installing a push button ignition on both that would only work wit the key turned to on.

DO NOT do #4 again...... to ANY engine, big or small.

I'm curious to know why it won't start. I hope you find the issue.

Honestly, try the easiest and use a spare key. See if that's the issue first before you tear the truck down to nuts and bolts and go into a seizure on the floor.

We just had an issue with a truck (not Toyota), that the fuel filter, was clogged with ice.

    Yes

In the summer months we have trouble with small engines, mainly chainsaws; that have water in the carburetors.

These are the guys still using ethanol blended gas, in the saws.

Ethanol actually, eats away some of the carburetors; or what is in the ethanol based fuels.

Might not be your problem; but it is worth a look.

It could be a coil pack or multiple coil packs crapping out.

You have the 4.0, correct? When you turn on the key can you hear the fuel pump running?

Don't all tacos from 05 up have a factory immobilizer in them, keys that are chipped?

I believe so, if it was the immobilizer it wouldn't crank though.

I was wrong, the engine immobilizer will let the engine crank, but it kills the spark and fuel....

    I'm all for that.

Super unlikely that all 6 coils are bad.

How did you use ether to check for spark the "easy way"?
