    She's gone but not forgotten.
Since I bought the truck I've always thought I had a stock one-wheel-spin-the-other-sit-there-like-a-retard rear axle.

Couple days ago I got to a friend's house. She's having a yard sale. So traffic is coming so thick I couldn't stop there, had to turn around. Pulled into someone's driveway, backing out of it the front tires got caught on a 'bout 3 inch lip from driveway level to road level. The back tires chirped when I hit the gas, when I was driving away I looked and BOTH tires had left a rubber patch on the road.

So I figure "maybe it's LSD in reverse or something"

Today I went down a VERY rough dirt / mud road going out into the sticks. Had to break the tires loose in the rear several times. I get home, BOTH sides of the truck have mud in the wheel-wells. Mud that had obviously been thrown there by a tire, not just walked up on a tire.

So I guess I got a LSD differential.

How unusual is that for a 1st gen prerunner?

If it's 100% 'factory' - so unusual it's impossible ... NO 1995.5 - 2004 Tacoma came from the factory with an LSD.

Did you buy the truck new or used?

If you bought it used, perhaps someone had an LSD installed in it?

Generally, the 95-04's didn't come with LSD's. I had a FSM for a 96 tacoma and they listed LSD's in the FSM. I thought that was kinda weird....like maybe it was offered at one point or somewhere? I dunno...

Have you had your VIN decoded for some info?

An open diff doesnt mean only 1 tire will spin all the time. In many cases, both will spin provided one tire doesnt have any more traction thant the other. Best way to tell if you have an LS diff is to put one tire on Pavement, the other in dirt, then hit the gas. If the one in the dirt spins, and the one on the pavement doesnt, its an open diff.

John....You should have an axel code on your door jamb. Next to the VIN number. It should look like this :

    B06A......Can you post it?

B03A...meaning 8 inch, 4.10 gearing, and 2 pinion open diff.

Interesting. Nothing special at all about mine.

    Got this from TTORA:

The axle code for your rig can be found on the manufacture's sticker located on the driver's side door jamb as follows:
    First digit:
    • A = 7.5" ring gear
    • B = 8" ring gear
    Next two digits:
    • 01 = 3:42
    • 02 = 3:58
    • 03 = 4:10
    • 04 = 4:56
    • 05 = 3:15
    • 06 = 3:91
    • 07 = 4.30
    Last digit:
    • A = 2 Pinion, Open
    • B = 4 Pinion, Open
    • C = 2 Pinion OEM Limited Slip

This is true! Little truck will chirp the tires with very little throttle. Someday it's gonna get me in trouble with Joe Lawman, when I ain't even trying!

Not always. My 2000 had an open diff, and when I jacked it up (all tires off the groung), and rotated the rear wheel forward, the other spun the same way.

Bah! I' sure i have the open diff at 4.10 but i cant match it up. Closest looking code is A02A , that doesn't sound right for a reg cab 4x4.

Nothing to match up. You have an 8.4" open axle with 4:10 gears. That code chart is only for the first gens.
