So the 2012 Tacoma owners manual does in fact show keys both for vehicles with and without immobilizer systems! Learn something new everyday.

Anyone know what vehicles don't have immobilizers? Based on engine or something?

    No, thank goodness.

My '13 base AC just has a plain 'ole key. Exactly what I want.

While waiting to determine if there's an immobilizer, issue -
There is an 'amplifier ring' just behind the keyway to pick up/transpond to/from the key chip, and pass the chip information to the computer.
If that amplifier is on the fritz it won't recog. any key.
It's known to go intermittent in at least another post. Unlikely to set any code, just let it crank....

    From oem parts supply; info.
    ELECTRICAL / BODY ELECTRICAL / ANTI-THEFT COMPONENTS / AMPLIFIER 8978304010 - amplifier
    TRANSPONDER KEY amplifier; Tacoma

    MSRPCore ?Online Price$151.48$0.00$113.61

OBTW: X4 on the ether; nix using that old-school carburetor-era fix to avoid f-up of your o2 sensors and catalysts.

If the OP ever comes back...

If you have a V6 engine then you do have an immobilizer and that could be the problem as others have suggested.

If you have the 4 cyl then you do not have an immobilizer and you can ignore everyone saying it is the immobilizer ;)

    No.
A bad starter would either turn over slow, or not turn over at all. That's it. a bad starter is not going to cause the fuel pump to not run, or the spark plugs to not fire.

A crank sensor, or something in the connection, could be one of several options. Having a scan tool, or an ultragauge to look at the engine data would be very helpful.

My 09 Regular Cab doesn't have an immobilizer and the keys aren't chipped.

Nope. Don't have it and don't want it. Expensive pain in the rear. I get keys cut for a buck fifty anywhere. I don't think any of the 2.7 liter 2TR engine models have the immobilizer.

IF you bought the "Courtesy Pkg" (i.e. alarm + other stuff) would it be in there ?? Just a thought but I may be wrong.
