break in mpg

i just bought a 2010 tacoma dc auto long bed 4x4 with 850 miles on it and i am getting 17 mpg i traded in my 08 tacoma dc 6spd 4x4 and i was geting 19 mpg i thought the autos were getting better mpg will i see an mpg increase after break in and many miles does it take to break it in

 

Isn't there about a 1000 mile break in period?

When I bought my first new car it was about that amount of time before it came into its own. I also changed the oil after 1k miles, so if there were any lose metal shaving from the factory they didn't damage the engine.

So why did you trade in an 08 if everything was working right on it?

 

I read in the manual the first 1k is the break in period. But there are guys that have said it took their truck as much as 2k for their engines to break in. Give it time and your MPG will increase.

 

You know come to think of it, my dad bought a new 07 DB 4x4 and it took him 2 or 3k miles before it started getting better MPG. I'm sure it will be fine, I'm still curious why someone would trade in a new '08 for '10?

 

Depends. I think of remote roads and hills when I see your in N Idaho. Not stop and go and no high speed interstate. Perfect for the 6spd shorter gearing.

Some areas the 6spd can match or beat the auto. I pull 20 all summer w/ my 6spd 4x4 in rural hilly driving, better than all the auto guys around here I know. Of course on the interstate at 70+, no way I can match the them.

Should get better w/ break in too.

 

I never really saw any increase in mileage with mine. However, it's been consistently right at about 20.0 since the first tank, so I'm not complaining.

 

Well, I'm just under 11k, so maybe I have something to look forward to!

Gas mileage is gonna vary.

I have an 07 Automatic (access cab 4.0L) and my truck seems to get 18mpg consistantly for the driving that I do to/from work. That same driving style in the coldest of winter gets me about 16mpg and that same driving style in the warmer days of summer gets me about 20mpg. And that's not doing anything different. Conditions vary. Traffic varies. Drying style varies.

 

I got 17.5 the first couple tanks, and then it gradually went up to 18.5 - 19.0

thanks for the replies i am hoping to get aleast 19 after break in i traded in my 08 because i hated the 6 spd

 

i saw jumps at 500, 750 and 1k. 500 was VERY noticable. only have 1200 on mine so far and i removed the secondary air filter at 1100 and that also made a diffence according to my scangauge on my daily commute.

 

it had 7 miles on it when i bought it i put 850 on it in 2 weeks
