Mine seems to switch in and out of 4wd better if I let off on the gas. It switches even better if I momentarily flip the gearshift into neutral.

Don't forget to put it in 4wd through the warmer months too, but if you want to turn at the same time, try to do that on sand, gravel, or someone's lawn.

It will switch easier when moving straight and not on the gas because there's less torque on the FWD components. Stopped is even better, although sometimes you may need to move it a little.

Man cool thread. Either you never put it in 4WD or you always have it in 4WD. I only put it in 4WD (F150) to get out of deep mud, deep sand, or to grind the gears.

OP, here's a pic of a transfer case that just couldn't take the binding stress any longer.

Thats the mod I'm shooting for. Transfer case with a display window to check wear and tear on components. Sounds like I'm on the right path :)

Yes, it is normal under the conditions you describe. But you want to minimize the conditions.
If It is bucking on you. Take it out of 4X4 and try to make the turn.
If you can't get traction. Put it back in 4x4 and continue on slowly in the widest turn radius possible.

I tried to make it simple and short for you Op.
Some times people get carried away with details.

Mine too. No throttle and it shifts instantly without a clunk. On the throttle I can feel the clunk.

In the summer I just kick it into 4 HI every time I'm on a dirt road...I figure that's enough to keep everything lubricated and keep the actuator working.

I appreciate all the replies both simple and detailed.

I teach radiology students at our hospital and I tend to get carried away with details sometimes when simple is better, but I like being thorough.

I probably came off with this post as being a 16 y/o with their first truck and no mechanical knowledge. I'm the opposite, I've done everything from clutches, paint jobs, upper engine rebuilds, motorcycles, home repairs, wood working, etc. Just new to 4WD and wanted a definite answer for this particular vehicle.

Thanks again for the info and the laughs :D

Old thread but thought I'd be sure our 2018s have the same issue with turning in 4wd. This is my 1st 4wd since the 80s but I don't remember the F250 I learned to drive on binding like my Tacoma. That said, that F250 had the turning radius of a 747. Anyway, I was in a gravel parking lot today so I threw it into 4wd hi to lube the gears etc and the truck literally stopped moving when I turned hard to park. Obviously, the gravel wasn't loose enough but felt as if I could easily brake something if I pushed it. So to be sure, this is normal and is something we just need to avoid correct?

This isn't an "issue", or specific to Tacomas. It's simply part of the nature of 4WD.

My F350 has such a heavy front end that the rear tires slip and you don't notice it like on a light weight truck like a taco. My diesel engine weighs over 1000lbs.

Should see what a Subaru brat feel like on dry road. Lol
