Anyone have a Helios? I'm looking at picking up a bigger setup for some steel head and big Browns...
Thinking of a Helios 9' 8wt with the hydros reel...
I get Ross and Abel reels at 40% off too so that's another option but not sure if I want to pay that much

I like Orvis and its cool they are made so close to me.

It might be a good idea to buy higher end reel for wt. 8 - you need a good drag. For my chum/spring setup wt.9 I use Sage 5680. Same reel goes on wt. 7 - coho/ping setup.

Has anyone made their own rod? There is a course out here for veterans that is free (donations encouraged) and they give you a rod building kit and have several rod builders there to walk you through it. Best part is they take you out to fish it afterwards.

Never done it, but there are people that come from all over the US to build a bamboo rod here in Blue Ridge at Oyster Bamboo Rods. Shit gets RIDICULOUSLY expensive!

sorry for the confusion - it was in reply to this:

The sentiment is more expensive reel can help if a big fish grabs your fly and departs for Osaka.
