Access cab or double cab? - need long bed

I am shopping for new Tacoma 4x4 and can't make up mind about access cab or double cab. I need long bed and when you add the double cab does that make it difficult to use as a allthetime vehicle for parking, etc. I have a dodge quad cab and sometimes it is a pain to do things like go to the grocery store parking. Anyone have a double cab long bed and regret or access cab and wish you had bought double cab?

 

I think the double cab long beds look too long. I would get an access cab, that is if you don't need the extra interior space.

I have a double cab + long bed! yeah parking it is alittle tough, but don't mind one bit the extra room inside or out back when going camping. Plenty of room

 

I have the DC LB, It can be a pain on the trail and in the parking lot. but I love all the space.

 

Thanks for the replies so far. I usually do not have passengers nor wish to have any, but my Dodge double cab sure is neat on trips with the xtra room. But this vehicle will also be my "car" so I know sometimes it is frustrating finding parking with a long bed double cab. I am thinking now for access cab, but not 100% sure I don't want that extra space.

Edit: I have toyota 4x4 reg cab 1993 with over 300K miles on it - gonna keep it too!

 

I went from a 05 access cab to an 09 double cab long bed because i needed the extra back seat room and I'm glad I did it made a world of differance with the kids and the dog and having the longer bed is nice if your moving sheet rock etc. as for parking it's not that bad I park far away so I don't get any morons giving me door dings!

I went with the access cab because I never have rear seat passengers and there's still enough room back there for what little things I carry in there. If I had it to do over again I'd still get the access cab. Didn't like how long the double cab long bed looked.

 

All I can say is that you get used to it.

Yes, it's long. No doubt there. But you learn to swing left before turning into a parking spot on the right. The backup camera becomes indespensible. The blind spots are huge, but you tune the mirrors so you can't see the side of the truck and they disappear.

What took me the longest to get used to was the way it turns. You sit ahead of the center point of the wheelbase, or pole of the radius. This means that when you turn, you have the distinct sensation of going sideways, rather than turning.

With all that said about the downsides, think of the upshots. You get a real backseat and a semi-real bed. The AC has what amounts to a laptop storage area, while the DC's are large enough to place real humans for a couple of hours at a time.

i have a dc lb. its a pain to park but worth the extra room. no matter what you drive,you get used to it.

I have the Double Cab long bed and use it for everything from hunting, grocery shopping, holidays, fishing, taking my boy to school, etc. No issues in length here. Love the room, especially in the back seat. I wish the bed was a foot longer. The bed is only 6 feet. Shouldn't even be called a long bed. More like a standard bed to me.

 

I got the Access Cab because the DC just didn't do it for me. I like having the standard 6ft bed, but if there was a short bed option on the AC I would have gotten that.

 

First of all, welcome to TW. I have the BSP DCLB and I love it. The bed is long enough to carry everything I have and the DC is nice to have. My peeps sit nice and comfortablely. As far as parking her, you'd get used to it. Just my 2 cents.

 

This sums it up well. I went from a 2000 4runner to a 2012 Taco DCLB, and while it has taken some getting used to, I do like having the extra space.

Parking is the biggest pain. I don't even bother driving in the city any more, but hey, that is why I got a pick up truck! Plus it is not really that bad, not like its a F150 or something crazy like that!

 

I am in the same boat as the original poster. I am looking at the double cab, or access cab. I was looking at the Long Bed vs. The Standard bed, and they where the same exact feet, at least that is what it said on the "Build your own". Same exact length. Which made me wonder. So I am thinking hard about exactly what I would want in my truck, if a navigation system, I can only choose a 4 x 4 double cab v6. If I don't want that, my options increase, and prices dramatically decrease. Without a navisystem, I guess it comes down to price, and roominess of the interior. Because if I am going to get 73.5 inches in truck bed length, with the standard bed, on any model. Then why would I want a dinky back seat? Of course I can see the beauty of the access cab for me. I think most of the time it will just be myself in the truck, or myself and my dog. I like the back seat for a good reason, extra space, and someplace the dog can be.

Okay, so I am leaning toward the double cab. But the access cab still gets me, the dog would be comfortable enough with a pad over the seats, and isn't to big. However, having a full backseat would be useful in the cases that I may carry more then one other passenger, and fury creature.

So yeah, that is my dilemma in any case. As I said, leaning toward the double cab, but the access cab looks great and the gas mileage in the truck with navigation is lower then the 4x2 pre runner double cab without the navigation system.

So, any body else with questions like these? Safety isn't a concern of mine because i know toyota consistently rates 4 and 5 stars on crash test ratings for all there vehicles.

So what do you guys and gals think?

 

I never have more than one passenger so AC was a no brainer. Plus I wanted the 6' bed and the DCLB just seemed so huge.

 

And after I wrote all that I believe I am going for a double cab standard bed length, with the navigation system. I may be sacrificing mpg, but the way I drive, which is exactly at the speed limit, I probably will have slightly higher gas mileage then most. So now that's settled for me.

The access cab is nice, it just doesn't come with the navigation system. And I want, completely and totally a want. I do need the cargo room occasionally. I am also very much sure that though I won't have any more passengers for a while other then my husband and myself and a dog, I want to keep this truck for a while.

So those who have a double cab, I have questions. I know its very easy to get to the room underneath the access cab back seats, what about the Double cab? Is that a little harder? How is the extra compartment space in the double cab? Also I see a lot of you have the long bed double cab, any one here with the standard bed? Since its the same size, does it even matter? Parking seems to be a pain, I figure that, I will get used to it.

So any more things anybody can tell me about their double cab? Any one have the navigation system in it?

 

I got the Access cab and love it, I really like the short turning radiius.

I wanted the Nav too and installed a Kenwood dash unit with Nav, camera, bluetooth and everything. Cost me about $600 from Crutchfield.com, which included the install kit, works great using the Garmin Nav system in the Kenwood.

There are several good aftermarket dash units, they all look like they grew there. I just went with the Kenwood because of the Garmin system which I am very familiar with.
