My 2007 has frame rust!!

Truck: 2007 Dbl cab long bed with 22k miles,
Location: New England
Issue:
I have pretty bad rust on the frame that started to flake. Most of the rust is located on the bottom of the frame right next to the cab mounts.
This weekend I cleaned as much as I could and primed frame with industrial primer. While cleaning I realized that most of the rust seems to be attracted by welds on the frame. In addition, I was surprised how thin coat of paint frame has.
Anybody else having similar problem?
Personally, I doubt these frames will last with out repainting them. Thinking that I may have to sell the truck before issue becomes much worst. Any thoughts.?

P.S. Any idea why Toyota did not paint front diff ?

 

i have a little bit of surface rust near the welds but nothing bad. i live in the salt belt of america it seems like too. im going to take a wire brush and some paint to the frame soon. just keep an eye on it and do some preventative maintenance when possible.

 

On the east coast, you may have to be the Bridge Inspector on a regular basis!

 

some surface rust seems to be pretty common on these trucks when operated in winter environments.. nothing a little maintenance each year can't prevent.

 

Surface rust doesn't affect the overall strength of the truck, it just looks bad.

Undercoat the frame or get surface rust, happens to everything in WI because of the road salt.

P.S. On my truck front diff is steel and rusted (now painted a little)

Work is still in progress but I m plannign to double coat with primer then paint it black.
You can see some of the lines that I painted due to rust, also (not shown o nthe pictures) brake line connections under the driver side had show lots of rust so I painted them too.

 

Problem is this is not surface rust. diff has surface rust but frame has a serious rust. Dont think undercoating helps much with that unleass undercoating has rust inhibitors.
I think part that upsets me is that I have 1994 LC that spend its life in New England, was not undercoated and still have frame in better shape then my 2007. But the difference between both frames is the amount of factory paint on them. LC has close to a 1mm of paint were 2007 Tacoma maybe half mm at best and still it is so soft that can be notched with finger nail.

 

Wouldn't Toyota cover this under their rust/corrosion warranty? Why not take it into them and have them do all the hard work?

I Spoke with Toyota and they refused to do anything about. They offered to do undercoating for $300+ which consists of spraying bunch of cans of NAPA rubber undercoating.
Its not a surface rust so rubber under coating will not help since no rust inhibitors are there. Frame will simply keep rusting under the under-coating
I also asked them if I can remove front and rear diffs for painting and they said would void warranty.
So I will be painting things in place and hope for the best.

Did you look at their website, http://www.toyota.com/tacoma/warranty.html

it says is right there "Rust-Through 60 months/unlimited miles (corrosion perforation of sheet metal)." Maybe you should call corporate and let them know what kind of service you are getting. Plus inform them that their dealership there is unwilling to live up to their warranty. Or try another dealership in the area...see what they have to say.

If it were me, I would still do my own but raise holly hell with Toyota just on the principle of the matter. That is just flat wrong if they refuse you when it's in their warranty.

 

What kind of paint did you use?
Mine is pretty rusty & have posted pics here before about it in another thread.

Every one up in the salt roaded regions have to be vigilant unfortunately.

I have seen the frame swaps and crusher parking lots for the 1GEN's & agree my pre tacoma 95 pickup frame was better after 10+ years than the 3 winter seasons on my 2006.

I fully expect this frame to bomb & hopefully TMCC will have to initiate another frame rust campaign with enough compliants.

 

I posted this on another thread. They bought back my 2000, now I have an 08. I'm trying to keep the frame and under body from rusting. My brother in law had a old Taco with 270,000 on it when he drove it to the junk yard, wouldn't pass NJ emissions but there was no rust on the frame. My question is two fold, if his old Taco with 275,000 on it had no rust why do our new ones get rust, and second it they buy them back they must know there is a problem, so why don't they fix it, go back to the old ways that worked? It just doesn't make any sense to me. They are going to ruin there good rep for something that is obvious.

 

I think you're missing the key words there - corrosion perforation. Just some surface rust/flaking isn't covered by warranty. The rust has to perforate (rust all the way through) the frame/body part to be covered.

 

I do not know what years this applies too but toyota has and is still replacing frames on some tacomas. When i was buying my 09 clunker i saw customers doing the paperwork for a new frame. I spoke to my service mgr who confirmed new frames were being installed and some were getting new trucks. I do not know what years or other infor. But this is a fact.

Problem is that frame does not have enough paint on it to prevent rust. I dont see any other solutions then, either repaint the frame or ditch the truck. I mean dont get me wrong I like the truck but I am pretty sure in less then 8 years these frames will start corroding with alarming rate. What is sad is that I can not even unbolt things for painting with out voiding warranty.
Paint I used is from tractor supply made for farm equipment and had been working for me on other cars/metal surfaces. So with good primer and paint, it should slow down rust. I am planning to figure out some way to paint inside the frame but one step at the time I was telling my wife what sucks is that I spent so much money for that truck and yet I am underneath painting it> I would have been more then happy to pay Toyota to get frame with extra 2 coats of paint.

 

I just let the frame and the spray paint meet.

Update:
Well I decided to speak to Toyota reps and ask them what they think about my frame rusting so soon, and they told me painting my frame my void warranty.
Also they have no plans to help, but I can go visit again my dealership and talk to them. So only solution is Napa rubberized undercoating (funny if dealership charges money for it then there is no warranty voided)
Ha ha there is gonna be lots of 2gens with frame rot soon. Parts trucks.
Well since I would like to keep the truck I will continue painting so F#$# Toyota rust Warranty it is better to loose that then have my frame rot in few years. I am gonna now paint my frame John Deere green

 

I'm going with Waxoyl : http://www.roversnorth.com/waxoyl/ on my 2010 dc. I found a guy that preps them good and seems to go the extra mile to cover as much as possible. We'll see how it works out.
