No bonus points for you, though. That be a valley oak. Pretty restricted range to the central valley (CA) and some other valley areas north of LA.

 

Figured I'd point this out since I always get confused by it...Hooded orioles have a hood that's yellow. I always think that the Bullock's oriole's black cap is the hood, but nope!

Dang, one I actually knew haha. Turns out I am not much for a bird watcher. Rocked the lecture exam for ornithology with a 90 but consistently bomb the identification quizzes in lab

 

Cause them noisy fuckers are always screaming in my back yard..

 

What's the format like for your lab quizzes/exams? Do they give you specimens?

 

We are given "skins" aka shitty old specimens. We get to see those directly at the end of the lab and that's it until the quiz. She also has slides with pictures which I generally do well on. We will have to either write down the Order or Family of each bird we ID. That normally screws me up because she gives about 30 seconds to ID the bird and I stress and write down the order instead of family. Or vice versa.

She has directions on the board (Bird 1 - Family, Bird 2 Order, etc) so I am just going to quickly put down an O or F on my paper to reduce the screw ups.

Really makes me mad . It's going to drop my grade from an A to a B easily.

 

Gotcha. That sounds pretty similar to my ornithology class's structure, except we had a ton of review opportunities to look at the specimens, and the specimens were out during the entire 1.5 hour lab.
We had flashcards that we could purchase or make ourselves, and I would highly advise doing that if you're not already.

And then I made the picture side. The left is a pic from Whatbird (the web version of the ibird app) and the right is a picture I took of the specimen because the colors don't always preserve, like in the oystercatcher.
