I make flash cards on study blue but I don't take pics of the specimen. Others do but they still do bad . I was told to try out natureinstruct.com so I am doing that this time around. The 2 hardest quizzes are out of the way. If I do poorly on this one then I am going to the lab instructor in hopes that I can do something to keep my grade decent.

    Hammond's Flycatcher?

Huh, haven't heard of nature instruct. Whatever works for you, though. I'm not sure what other people did to study. I took it in the fall and early winter so we had migrants around and you could just walk around Davis to test yourself. :p

    Correct!

And natureinstruct.org is a site put together to help students. You can select specific birds you are studying, then it generates sounds bits and pictures so you can study them. There is also a quiz feature that works like flash cards. It shows you multiple pictures and sounds, then you select which bird you think it is. If you are wrong is takes you to the bird you selected so you can compare pics and sounds then you go back to the quiz and try again until you get it right.

So far it's better than my flashcards because I can use sound (we get sound for flycatchers) and then I also get lots of pictures to see the differences. I was just getting used to the one picture on my flash card, so when I saw a different angle I was lost on what bird it was.

Oh that's pretty cool! Probably would've helped a lot of people in my lab...
Do you only get sound for flycatchers? Maybe you said before somewhere, but for me we had to know like 330 species by ID and 90 by song.
For the Empidonax flycatchers we could just put "Empidonax sp." and that was good enough.

We have others that we have to know by sound, like the loon. Its not 90 species but for the final they will play sounds and we have to ID it. They are giving us sound for the fly catchers because how similar they look and how crappy the skins are haha

Does it need a location? Seems pretty distinctive to me, should be easy enough to look up in the book.
So far I've only been posting north american birds, and if I decide to post any from Ecuador I'll specify.
