Why would the upgraded UG only read Trans temp's on Automatics?

Manuals don't overheat for the same reasons. Automatic transmissions use the fluid to transfer power so they tend to build up a lot of heat under heavy use or lots of shifting. Manuals usually don't have heat issues unless they've been pushed way past their operating capacity.

Plus I don't think the Tacoma has a temperature sensor on the manual transmission that reports back exact temperature. I think it's just a dummy light for when the transmission falls outside of a certain limit, just like the oil pressure sensor on the Tacoma.

Do manuals have a trans temp sensor?

Manuals use gear oil for lubrication only. They really don't get hot or overheat. No real need to watch the temps or change out the fluid for that matter. Most are sealed systems now.

Automatics use the fluid as hydraulics. Create's a lot of heat. Especially when there's a lot of up/down shifting. The heat breaks the fluid down, lowering it's useful life. The hotter it gets, the lower the life span.

I just got my MX 1.3...I also got "Err" for my Trans F temp. I checked the presets against the ones listed at the start of the thread. They were different. I wrote down the factory info and then changed it to match the code info listed here. Worked...now I have a Trans F read out.

I selected the Tundra/Tacoma 2005+ when placing the order. Guess something was a miss. I have a 2015 Tacoma PreRunner.

Finally got it working....for some reason I had it as Mgauge 2 instead of "5". Appreciate all the work the OP and others invested in this project.[IMG]

The group at Ultragauge pre-programmed my unit for the 2005-2011 series instead of the newer year models. So if you recently ordered one and have a 2012-2015 that comes up Err, check to see if they programmed it for the earlier year series.

Does anyone have the other Mgauge parameters for the newer Tacoma series? Don't think I would use them much but I would like to correct them if possible.

Day 1 driving with Mx 1.3 w/Trans Temp.

Vehicle start 10am: Coolant temp and trans temp were at same temp, 64deg inside garage.

First task was towing a ~3000 boat & trailer 25 miles. Downhill the Trans temp stayed in the 140 deg range. Once onto mostly flat terrain the trans temperature jumped to 155 - 170deg. Starting from a stop, the temp would immediately pop up to 180deg until the vehicle was back at cruising speed. temp would drop back down to 170deg or below.

Dropped off boat and trailer and then drove 12 miles on flat same roads. Transmission temp would hover at 140-150deg.

Now that I am watching the transmission temp, it is useful to understand the numbers. I found this chart useful, it was posted on TW in the towing section under 'what are you towing'

That's some pretty good observations there! Today the outside temp got to 82*f and noticed my trans temps jumped from 130 to 165 while doing 0-60 run. Soon after starting to coast temps dropped back to 130 ish within the next mile.

Got my UG back yesterday. It's odd how little I monitor my stock gauges, but pay the appropriate level of attention to the UG.

Just a couple of quick trips in town and the tranny temps floated around 115F with an outside temp of 40. Observed some changes while moving, at a stop, and coasting. Interesting stuff. I will have to pay a bit closer attention over the next few days so I can report back.

Has anyone noticed a correlation between low trans fluid and trans temps?

Normal, once air gets trapped in the tran cooler it reduces efficiency, the more fluid you have the better cooling.

I guess what im saying is for people who had low trans fluid from the factory, did they notice a rise in temps, and what temp would that be?
