It varies by state. In Massachusetts, no deductible for glass (depending on coverage), no insurance penalty for glass replacement either. They will not replace a windshield for a chip, they'll patch it. it must be cracked.

I have Geico too. I got a chip in my windshield and they covered a chip repair at no cost to me (through Safelite). There was no increase in my deductible.

I do have a deductible for glass replacement, which I believe applies to windshield replacement.

Call them up and ask, they can't raise your rate for inquiring.

I just saw this thread. For those of you that have used Safelite is the windshield smooth? The replacement windshields I have got from other repair businesses here in Utah are wavy. Move your head from side to side and see if the glass ripples the view. Factory glass doesn't do that. I have about 10 major pock marks on my factory glass that have been repaired but its looking pretty beat up. I'm thinking my next rock truck rock will be the end of it.

New Safelite windshield installed less than 2 weeks old. I haven't noticed any ripples, so if they're there, they're not noticeable.

Well, I just filed an online glass claim with Geico and it said that I'd have a $500 deductible to satisfy against the claim. I sent them a message to ask if that was really the case and if so, to cancel the claim, since I know I can get this done for less than $300 on my own.

Thanks for the suggestion to try and file a claim folks, but it ain't in the cards for me today apparently.

$500 deductable damn. You should fix that, mine is only $100.

I had the windshield replaced in my '09 TRD Sport by Safelite. The windshield and all of the markings (mesh dots, sun strip at the top, etc) were the same as OEM. In FL, there is a zero deductible on Comprehensive coverage for windshield replacements. So I drove in and drove out with $0 out of pocket so I can't really comment on the cost of it. That's just the way it is with FL coverage. That aside, I can't tell the difference between the Safelite and the OEM one looking at it. Or through it in this case. :D

You do realize the difference in policy costs when you go from a $500 to a $100 deductible, right? Why would I want to pay a much higher rate, all year, for a deductible that I plan on never using during that year?

Here in NJ, the annual rate increase between having a policy with $100 deductible vs a $500 deductible is way more than $400, so I'm still coming out on top.

Just got the email from Geico:

    Dear Raymond:

Thank you for using GEICO's online Claims Center to report your glass claim.

For this claim, your Comprehensive coverage deductible of $500 will apply. We are closing the claim, as the cost to replace your glass falls within the amount of your deductible. If the cost of this glass replacement should exceed your deductible, please contact us so that we can update your claim status and provide further assistance if needed.

If you have not scheduled with a glass shop, here are some guidelines to consider when choosing a repair facility:

    • Inquire about the rates. The prevailing competitive labor rate for glass repair or replacement is about $40 per hour (based on the National Auto Glass Specifications pricing guide).

    • Determine if the repair work will actually be completed by the shop you choose. If the work will be outsourced, you may be charged a sublet fee (a fee charged for outsourcing the work to another dealership or body shop).

If you need further assistance, please call us at 1-800-510-2291 or log into the Claims Center at geico.com to contact us via email. Our glass claims associates are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Please refer to your claim number when contacting us.

To learn more about how GEICO handles claims, please visit geico.com.

    Sincerely,

    Melissa Wielgus

It's good not to live in Jersey, my rate is low and my deductible is low.

So many reasons not to live in NJ, but I can't do anything about that now, so I have to deal with it.

I just scheduled the work with the SL folks, to have the work performed in one of their local shops. We have 6" inches on snow on the ground right now and it's still coming. I'd rather not deal with the work being done outside right now, so I'll take it into their shop, which is only a few miles away. I took an appointment for Wednesday, first thing in the morning.

With my credit from the prior repair they did to this windshield, my total cost, counting tax, disposal fee, molding, installation, glass, etc will be $150.

I had SL replace the glass on my 08 over the summer. Like the OP I also had a $500 deductible on glass. but for a mere $32 more a year in coverage, glass was knocked down to $100 deductible.
The replacement was the same as what I had in there as stated by another, with the addition of rain "gutters" on the edges, which the OEM glass does not have. Very happy with the install and final results.

I'll have to inquire about this. Didn't realize you could set a different deductible for glass-only claims.
