The ABS does absolutely keep you rolling right along on snow, but there is a cure:

    ^^^This

Pop the auto trans into neutral.

    Excellent idea.

    ^^^^This

    ^^^^This

    Yep

With a manual, put the clutch in

Heck, I can pull out of the garage onto my steep driveway and the ABS will kick in and I'll slide right into the street. I put the auto trans into neutral and voila, the ABS shuts off and I come to a halt instantly. Yoko Geolander A/T's.

Same thing on any slippery road - ABS will kick in while in gear, pop it into neutral ABS shuts off and I come to a halt. I learned long ago to either pop the clutch in or pop it into neutral before I hit the brakes.

I promise you pushing in the clutch made no difference on my 2007; I can't speak for the autos yet. My 2015 is the first automatic transmission I've ever owned.

I didn't need or have time to shift into neutral, but I'll try to keep that in mind.

It is possible my winter tires have until now prevented me from having this issue.

btw, base 4x4, no vsc, no atrac, nothing but base 4x4.

Just wrecked my truck tonight due to this. Wasn't even in ice. I live in hawaii. It was a wet grass... Airbags deployed and alignment is way off don't know what damage is done until i take it in tomorrow. Ridiculous. I had full control then NONE...

Glad your okay man! I had it happen once off-road with no snow or ice as well, was driving down out of a corn field while it was raining and just missed hitting a barn.

Can you give us more details; like were you going down hill, did your speed increase after ABS was active, did you let off brakes at all or try throwing it in neutral, what did you end up hitting?

So -- new Tacoma owner here. I had a Prius before this, and the Prius did something really weird that I was able to replicate with ease. There is a little pothole on the road leading out of my house. It's about 50 feet in front of an intersection. If I hit that little pot hole --- which was more like hitting a slight bump in the road --- while braking .... my car would suddenly act as if I had completely let off of the brakes. I had to quickly take my foot off of the brakes and reapply in order to prevent from slamming into a car in front of me on several occasions.

This sounds kind of similar to the problem you guys are having with the Tacoma ... and it's a problem that I really hope not to see happen on my Tacoma.

Well i was going down a small hill length of about a city block same trail its mostly grass and hard dirt. I've gone on a lot it was wet but no big deal. Made it down halfway on the steeper section absolutely fine perfectly normal. Fully in control of the vehicle and suddenly like snap of your fingers my brakes totally lost all power. My truck just started rolling kept going faster. I pumped my brakes twice very quickly then kicked down the E brake. I have an automatic and was already in compound low. Which i also don't understand because as far as i knew ABS was fully disabled in 4 low. So i don't know how the heck my brakes totally turned off. Honestly seems better for brakes to lock up than turn off. Then at least you can control more. Ended up hitting and embankment and almost rolled the truck which is why i think the side airbags deployed. I really just don't know why an essentially brand new truck with 3200 miles on it would do this.

I find it helpful myself. I experimented a couple years ago on a few inches of virgin snow on an 18 degree F day and looked at the skid marks when ABS kicked in. At about 30mph I could see the dot-dash (so to speak) of the tire tracks as the brakes pulsed. The spaces where the wheels were not locked were actually quite long.

So during the pulsing action when the ABS doesn't have the wheels locked the engine just keeps pushing the truck along. Here's a pic of a test on the same day at about 12mph with the clutch in. On the left ABS enabled, on the right ABS fuse pulled. Even with the clutch IN the ABS had a much longer stopping distance, so yes you're screwed either way but getting out of gear really is helpful.

Even if you are pumping the brakes yourself, if you're in gear every time you let off the brakes the engine will keep pushing the truck along.

I think Einstein Relativity law says something about if you travel at speed of light its so fast you would appear standing still. I look at that photo and everybody are standing still therfore everybody must be traveling with speed of light, which is way too fast for conditions.

Yes I know you posted sarcasm :D

I hope that's a dash cam. Otherwise he was not only speeding but trying to take a picture with his phone :p. Drive for the conditions, ABS or not. If you're rolling through regularly it's time to cut out the ABS on snowy days.

In snow/ice, you MUST push your clutch pedal in or put your automatic in neutral if you wish to stop. I've seen RWD cars stopped at a traffic light with their rear wheels churning away...driver unaware that his car was trying to go. Think that might just delay stopping? YES!

I recently decided my brakes weren't working too good, so I backed down my driveway a half dozen times and hit the brakes hard in reverse. That's how drum brakes are adjusted "automatically". This is not a new problem. It's been a problem for automatic adjustable rear drums for about 40 years. Think about how you use your brakes in reverse...coast down the drive, coast to a stop, select a forward gear? That doesn't get your rear brakes adjusted up. I wish Toyota would go to discs on all four.

Huh , that's interesting because I never HAD to push in the clutch or drop it into neutral in any of my other ABS and non ABS vehicles to stop in winter before

I think it's abundantly clear that stomping on the brakes on slick surfaces is a living nightmare. Feather them, disable the ABS, or pop it into neutral. Any one of those three methods will get you better results than full mash.

Wow, I thought this was fixed in the 2014! I guess I haven't escaped the problem in my new 2014. BTW, the ABS is only disabled when in 4WD Low and when the rear differential is locked.
