How do most people go about it? Is it cheaper to source after market stuff? For my 2016 Tacoma, I'll be looking to add:

    1) Chrome plated tube steps ($535)
    2) A front skid plate ($205)
    3) A roof rack ($339)
    4) Remote starter (?, I dont think Toyota sells this)

Is it best to negotiate this stuff upfront when buying new or can one get it for cheaper elsewhere?

    Thanks.

Are the front skid plates worth it? I wont do much hardcore offroading. Mostly beach driving, and I was hoping to protect the underside from rocks from the road, going into a ditch off an icy road etc. Does it offer any protection from road salt?

It's kind of the case where I never will really need it, just a precaution, but I wonder if I'm not offroading other than the beach, if I should bother with it.

Thats why Im wondering if I should save the $$$ and even bother with a plate. The front of my current compact sedan gets beat up pretty badly (angled driveway, ice in parking lots, the occasional curb etc). Granted I wont have to worry about that with a Tacoma cause its a higher vehicle, but the idea of protection is appealing (I messed up my front bumper last winter reversing over ice, pulled it right off).

Does the OEM plate protect from road debris and salt? Just wondering what the consensus is Re: plates for guys that dont wheel.

The TRD skid plate will not protect against road salt, but it should protect against the groundhog standing up in the middle of the road, as well as the pile of snow at the end of the parking place. I bought it because the front bumper is high, leaving the splash shield exposed to possible damage.

Is the splash shield made out of plastic?
