SOLVED! Post 2853 Leaking Injectors, Dealer Techs Rock! Extended Cranking after Engine Swap 3.4L 5vz

have a dirty old jump suit or change of clothes with you and go to the carwash and use the engine degreaser and tire cleaner setting (green stuff) then use the pressure washer and be prepared to lay down in wet grim and get under the car (hubby's job) and when you hit it with the pressure, be ready for stuff to blow back all over you getting dirty and soaking wet so this is definitely a summer time thing. then throw dirty nasty hubby in the bed of truck because I know he is definitely not allowed in truck when that wet and dirty.

just don't spray the pressure directly at any gasket surfaces like the oil pan gasket, make sure when you clean these areas your angled at least 45 degrees and 90 degrees accross from the direction of the gasket so the force of water glances off and not in the crack pushing against any gaskets. before you do all this its a good idea to get under there with a paint stirring stick to scrape off as much as you can. the wooden stirring stick doesn't hurt the paint so it acts like a spatchula to scrap gunk off.

one last cautionary note, if its really all greasy and grimy its probably got years of slow oil leaks to cause this and after cleaning it up you will likely see oil leaks that had been plugged up by all the gunk. this ois one of those situations where its best to leave things alone so you don't find or even create problems you don't already have, sometimes its best to just leave it be, the smell is just the fresh exposed areas of oil gunk and will go away in a few weeks.

Seriously though, I hadn't thought about that - what you said about the smell will go away. Ya think the remaining oil will burn off IF the leak is truly sealed up (meaning there wouldn't be any more oil being added to the nasty areas IF the leak was stopped, so the old stuff would eventually all burn off?)?

 

my mistake, have him strip down to his shorts then and put towels to protect the seats or toss him in the trunk (or you can just make him walk home lol) but you get the idea, he will be a wet, dirty, nasty smelling passenger on the ride home

assuming the first cleanup didn't spring a few new leaks that need time to clog up, the smell will go away but warm weather helps. with it being this cold its hard to "burn off" the smell when the car barely gets warm in this cold weather. for now, just throw a pine tree air freshener in it.

 

I'm looking at trucks for sale - found a 2002 Tundra that looks pretty cool. Are 2002 Tundras known for engine failure, more specifically piston holes, by chance?

 

What motor is in it? Lots of 4.7L V8's still.running around though I do think they have the same timing belt replacement interval as your Tacoma. Keep in mind a 1st generation Tundra is a lot like a 2nd generation Tacoma, if you dont mind the size a new generation Tacoma would be a little more efficient and easier to maneuver.

Whoa! Just heard from neighbor, he talked to our mechanic. He thinks the pump is not getting enough voltage during hot starts, meaning some kind of problem with wires going to it, or relay or something like that. Said the noid lights go nice and bright upon good cold start ups, then dim down like they are supposed to, but on hot starts they are dim from the start. I was hoping to get a call from the mechanic today but they close at 5 so unless he's burning the midnight oil, it's looking like we might not hear more details on this til Monday.

We tried swapping that EFI relay and no change, so thinking it can't be that. And I thought our previous mechanic checked the fuel pump circuit thingy, but maybe not? I know that mechanic said the wires looked fine inside the tank that go to the pump. So I'm confused as to where exactly the problem might be, but at least it sounds like the mechanic is making some important discoveries, so I'll take it!

I really like the size and style of those older Tundras, they look a lot like Tacos compared to the newer Tundras. This one is a TRD Off Road 2002 Tundra automatic, 4WD, with 100K for $14K. Looked up the blue book and even in tip top shape it's $10,500.

But now it sounds like there might be hope again that the Taco could live on. So I'll stop online truck shopping for now......

 

14k buys a lot of fuel pump relays and MAF sensors. I don't think the EFI relay is the fuel pump relay (but I could be wrong)

I'm wondering if it's the Fuel Pump Control Circuit in the attached file:

"In the diagram below, when the engine is cranked, current flows from terminal ST of the ignition switch to the starter relay coil and also current flows to terminal STA of ECM (STA signal).
When the STA signal and NE signal are input to the ECM, Tr is turned ON, current flows to coil of the circuit opening relay, the relay switches on, power is supplied to the fuel pump and the fuel pump operates.
While the NE signal is generated (engine running), the ECM keeps Tr ON (circuit opening relay ON) and the fuel pump also keeps operating."

I thought our mechanic that had to go to Florida checked this, but could be a miscommunication.

 

I owned the exact truck-2002 TRD Tundra.

It was in fact, the perfect size. Comparing the interior to my 2nd gen Tundra, I'll choose the 1st Gen hands down. Much higher quality and the dash was much more appealing than what I have now. I actually still hate my dash on the 2nd gen Tundra.

Economy was kind of disappointing. I was only able to achieve 15 mph on a few occasions-most times only high 13's. Basically the same as what I get now with the 2nd gen.

The 4.7 engine is very reliable engine and has plenty of power for the size of the truck. The only thing that was lacking was the transmission. In 2002, the transmission was the same transmission that you now have in your Tacoma. Great transmission for the Tacoma, not so great for the Tundra. Because of this fact, the planetary gear assembly was prone to destruct and it is a very expensive to repair of replace. Swapping my own out with my own labor was still $1000. If you knew for a fact that the truck was never used for towing, you may be okay. The towing of heavy trailers would acerbate the destruction of the transmission. I used mine for towing and ended up paying the stupidity tax. I knew about the weak transmissions, but still towed heavy trailers.

My first love is still the 1st gen Tacoma. Others have stated, that once you have gone big in a 2nd gen Tundra, you won't be able to go back to a Tacoma. I'm not in that group.

That's a lot of $$ for a 02..
They can be had here with comparable mileage for 6-10k..
I own a 02 Trd sr5 tundra that's my dd.
Had to replace the trans due to the weak od planetary also.
Good news is the newer updated transmission bolts right up on the 4wd and can be had for next to nothing used since the yards never sell the newer ones due to them never breaking, I think I gave $250.for the trans I bought with right around 100k..
Twice the truck as my 3rz taco imo but the gas mileage flat out sucks..
I recently took it on a trip to Florida and only got 15 mpg on the highway doing about 75-80 all interstate..12-13 most of the time.
If your looking for a tundra I'd suggest getting one a little newer than 02,
I've heard The later ones with vvt and 5 speed automatic transmissions added a few more mpgs

Been detailing the Civic all weekend, right down to painting the hubcaps sparkly silver and shampooing the floor mats. It is now the most pimpin' high school looking car a middle aged person ever drove. At least it will be ready to sell should we wind up deciding to go that route, and it's nice to drive a cleaner car in the meantime.

We decided sometime in the last week or so that if this nonsense with Taco is still going on in early May, we'd give up and get a different truck. Cuz we refuse to go through a summer here truckless. That would be PURE TORTURE. There's just so much to see and do, and Civic just ain't gonna cut it on the drive to the middle of nowhere trips, no matter how sparkly her hubcaps are. So Taco has until early May to keep misbehaving, then she's cut off. And I reserve the right to move the deadline sooner, pending how my sanity is doing.

you have to be rich to afford to drive a tundra, or own your own gas station, they aren't expensive to buy, just expensive to drive them

(im talking about the newer "I only get 13mpg on a good day when a tailwind is pushing me" versions)

Hey there TW!

Been a while! Been trying to keep myself nice and busy doing a bunch of projects around the house, to stay distracted from getting stressed about the truck.

Last Friday, my neighbor who referred us to this mechanic (they are buddies) said the mechanic thought it was an issue with the fuel pump not receiving enough voltage during the excessive crank starts. I'd hoped to hear more on that this week, but also figure when he has something worth telling us, he'll call. This morning I'm going to take a couple of parts down there that just arrived (thank you!) and also some cookies. Hoping maybe I'll get a little tidbit of info on where things are at.

Although it has been kinda nice to take a mental vacation from it for a bit, and just put all trust in letting him figure it out. But I do miss all of the exciting thread talk!! We gotta keep the thread alive, because someday it WILL either be fixed or sold, so everyone has to stick around to see what happens on the FINAL EPISODE!!!

 

Dropped off MAF and igniter, and peanut butter cookies. Told my mechanic about the guy on TW who's hot start was fixed with different MAF. I think he's gonna try switching it to see. Showed him in the FSM where it talks about fuel pump control circuit, and let him know it also has a section on the starter signal circuit. He is such a cool guy - really super nice and easy to talk to about this stuff. Doesn't get offended at all when I tell him what I've read/thought of, or show him stuff in FSM. And yet it's obvious he knows what he is doing - it's just taking a long time because he's prioritizing other cars, I think because they plan to go easy on us regarding labor charges. For now, that set up is working just fine for me, because we've got that stylin' Ford Escort sedan free loaner car! Although I do really miss the truck. Been a week since I last saw it - I felt like I was visiting my sick kid in the hospital! Love that truck. Hope like hell our mechanic doesn't give up and keeps digging til he finds the answer - but every time I've talked to him, it sure as hell seems like that's his attitude, so I think he'll get it eventually.
