I'll make you a deal on the ORI's, I would like to go back to an extended travel coil over. The ORI's are a little to trick for how little I drive the truck since I picked up a 2003 Rav4 for a commuter car.

I went by a buddies house today to pick up the plasma cutter and some parts for the FJ40, we figured we would take the truck out for a joy ride and ended up running into a couple of built jeeps and a very built K5 blazer so what we thought was going to be a 1/2 hour cruise turned into a 4.5 hour snow wheeling trip. Phone and camera were both dead so only got a couple of photos we'll get more next time turns out the group we ran into goes out at least once a month and said they would get in touch the next time they go.

CEL P0500 Vehicle Speed Sensor Malfunction

My speedo went goofy a couple of times today needle was bouncing between 0 and 30 MPH then would stop working then start working again.

At first I thought it was a stretched speed sensor wire, in 2009 I broke a speed sensor wire and lost my speedo altogether.

Thinking about it now, we broke a lot of trail today with lots of skinny pedal+supercharger in sugary snow with crust on top and some good drifts in the canyon bottoms. Currently the traction control stays engaged on the truck in 4lo. I broke the 4lo sensor when installing the crawler. I picked a new one up but did not install it when I realized 4lo with traction control on the open diffs works really well. So I'm guessing that's what caused it.

Anybody else ever had this code or got thoughts on it?

Looks like a fun trip. We are supposed to get a good 8" of snow here in NJ tomorrow so I'm looking forward to some snow wheeling. As for the error code I looked this up in the FSM.

    Manual Transaxle Models:
The ECM assumes that the vehicle is being driven, when the indicated engine speed is more than 2,000
rpm and the engine load calculated by the ECM is more than certain level. If there is no signal from the
vehicle speed sensor, despite these conditions being met, the ECM interprets this as a malfunction in the
speed signal circuit. The ECM then illuminates the MIL and sets a DTC.

I have had my traction control/ABS lights on for over a year now I think it's due to a bad speed sensor in the wheels or maybe a wire for the speed sensor and I've never gotten a P0500 from it. For the manual transmissions, I would almost think it would have to be the speed sensor in the t-case or the wiring in between, double check them. Maybe pull the sensor out and make sure the worm gear isn't worn and the extended wiring from the crawlbox install didn't get corroded or loose connection.

Good call on checking the wires that were extended for the crawler swap I didn't think of that so I'll take a look. The truck was definitely being driven.....lets just say the rev limiter came into play a lot today and tachometer at 5-6k was the norm when we were breaking trail. So that's where I was thinking the traction control was the issue based on 5-6K and a very low wheel speed using the crawler in 4th gear at times when the CEL popped.

On my 05 auto, when the wires to one of my front wheel speed sensors were cut my VSC and ABS lights came on as well as my Ebrake light. When I fixed it the Ebrake light went away but I still get occassional blips of the VSC light coming on. I think I have a poor connection somewhere on one of the other wheel speed sensors. From my reading, that Ebrake light is the big indicator of losing a wheel speed sensor.

I didn't have speedo issues though, but my understanding is that the autos read speed from the rear tires (and I lost a front wheel sensor). I know the manual reads it from the Tcase so I would start with the Tcase wires like Anthony suggested.

Brady, you bring up a good point about the VSC, ABS and parking brake lights, they did not get tripped only the CEL.

I may have looked up the wrong code as I didn't write it down so it could possibly be this code instead.

P0050 HO2S Heater Control Circuit (Bank 2 Sensor 1) VS.
    P0500 Vehicle Speed Sensor Malfunction

I will check the UG and see if I have any pending codes, I may have moved a zero? Might just have to wait and see if I produce the code again. I don't think its an issue just trying to track down why it came up.

I didn't think about this on my last post, but with all of my wheel speed sensor issues I have never had them trip the CEL. But they may have added something to the ECU on the 09+:notsure: I always get all the traction control/ABS lights and that 1 time the Ebrake light.

You did say your speedo was acting funny though so you may not have slipped a zero. Maybe if I pull one of my rear wheel sensors and lose my speedo I'll get a CEL with it:notsure:

I've been getting a CEL light and that code P0500 randomly over the last year or so. First time it happened, I unplugged all the wheel sensors and replugged them back in then cleared the code with my ultragauge and it went away. Next time it came back, I unplugged and replugged in the senser on the tcase, cleared the code and it went away. Third time I just cleared the code and it went away. Everything since then I just clear it and it goes away until the next unknown random occurrence. I haven't had my speedo freak out like that at all but I'd say probably 1/4 of the times I crank my truck and start driving, my speedo doesn't work at all. While I'm driving I just shut the engine off then back on and it starts working again. I was thinking maybe this had something to do with the speedo calibrator because the two problems have never happened at the same time but Idk, they may be related

Thanks for the info, I'll keep an eye on my speedo to see if it starts acting up and next time it pops a code I'll write it down.

Thanks, gears are a must the crawler is a bonus all together they make the truck just about perfect.

I did discover a fuel leak after the last time we went wheeling think its pretty minor (inline fuel filter) just need to get it in the garage to take a look and make sure.

Fuel leak is fixed, loose hose clamp on the inline fuel filter. Guessing it got pushed back from all the snow that was packed under the truck when wheeling it a few weeks ago.

Awesome build! My favorite on TW. Are you still trying to get rid of your ORI's?

Not sure, part of me wants to go back to a coilover just because. I do worry about a failure with the ORI's but they have been bullet proof to this point and the ride is awesome with them. The last time I charged them was spring of 2014 and they are still at ride height so I think they are way tougher than I give them credit for.

    ALL OF THEM!...Then some more.
My dad had his less then a year. After they went flat 4 times in a row on a basic trail romping...he was done.

We think his rig was too heavy for them though. Sold them to a buddy with a reg cab 4banger and he is doing great.

    They did ride awesome.

I followed that when sconnie ?picked those up and tracked it back to the issues your dad was having. I've had no issues with mine but the thing I always think about and that bugs me is the zero tolerance for failure with the ORI's. Plus I haven't done anything to the truck lately so maybe I should get the plasma out and start hacking best reason I can think of to change stuff....I would probably end up with ORI's again and a 3 link.
