    Just to review:

This ABS problem is most likely a software issues with the Tacoma
Not all Tacoma's seem to be universally affected

Most of us will probably never have this issue. For those that do there is no clear option on how to "fix" it. You're left with trying to adjust the system with better tires and a safer driving style to try not to set off the problem or disabling the ABS/VSC. Disabling the ABS/VSC can have it's own set of conditions that could put you in a hazardous situation.

Okay, now back to another couple of pages of useless banter before I retype this again.

You forgot " whenever people try to dismiss the issue they substitute the word " ice " in place of " snow ""

You know snow is a frozen water just like ice, just aerated . And snow and ice can be in the same plane of existence.

Airliners have had ABS since the 1960s. Like everything else on an airplane it can be disabled. An airline pilot told me it didn't work on snowy, slushy runways (couldn't stop), he always turned it off under those conditions.

I want to install an ABS disable switch on my 2009 Regular Cab. Any recommendations from those with experience?

I have driven vehicles without ABS on ice so I know what to expect.

Hmmm...last time I posted here I asked if people had tried different brake pads to affect this situation, but I didn't see any responses.

    so, anybody?

Also, I've tried several times to get my truck to "lose" the brakes in an ABS situation, but so far I still haven't been able to.

SO now I wonder how many Tacomas will crash this winter, and if it will be enough that the insurance industry gets the NTSB to move on a recall.

Regarding autos, I learned to drive in north Minnesota, and we were always taught to shift to neutral coming to a stop with an auto. I have not been doing that, and I've tried it with the A/C clutch both on and off, as I believe the ECU bumps the idle speed when the A/C or defroster is running.

BTW, I was a professional driver when I was 18. I drove from Ogden to Dugway delivering drygoods for the AAFES. I got paid $3.65/hr, thus I was a pro. That's the definition. You don't have to run 24hrs at LeMans to be a pro. You just have to get paid to drive.

Being a pro doesn't make you good, however. There are lots of bad pros in every field.

I still have yet to experience what you guys are talking about here. I've covered a lot of snow and icy roads this winter. A light applying of the brakes leads to a smooth controlled stop. I've went up and down hills, through 12+ inches of unplowed snow getting back into the cabin.

Stopping on ice isn't going to happen with or without ABS. I can't believe 95 pages beating a dead horse.

Well, clearly it's happening to people. Just because it hasn't happened to us, could be luck, or circumstances, or "sample variations" in manufacturing.

    But IMHO it's no myth.

It is, however, a technical enough issue that there will be a lot of testimony before a recall is issued.

Yes they can , but a snow covered road is not automatically an ice covered road

Im working on heated tires, so the ABS doesn't fuck up stopping on snow/ice.

I had similar issues with my 04 4runner 4x4. I thought it was from the lack of having stability control or something, where's my 09 jeep wrangler unlimited 4x4 had no issues at all. I had both vehicles back to back in the snow and the jeep felt more stable and stopped with confidence when driven within means. Both had normal AT tires.

Haven't driven the new taco in the snow yet.

You must have been driving to fast for conditions and slammed on your brakes. Rear wheel drive push isn't a real problem, I had an 01 s10 pickup and it never did that.

Honestly though, I've never heard of anyone ever needing to put a vehicle in neutral when coming to a stop on snow or any other conditions. It might help on these trucks though. I do know that while I own this Tacoma; I will have one hand on the shifter and one eye on the future ABS kill switch, whenever I'm braking in any kind of slippery conditions at low speeds.
