Anyone have any info on the manual option? Quoting from autoblog.com, "The V6 can also be mated to a new six-speed manual transmission." I hope this means they will make the 6th gear taller. My biggest pet peeve with my '15 is that it never really feels like I'm able to cruise on the freeway - I always get the sensation that the truck is being held back because the rpm's are higher than I'd like them to be, when coasting as well. At least make the final drive ratio equal to the automatic. That would be the kicker for me on whether to trade-in in a few years.

All I have heard is that it is new. Probably optimized for better MPG.

It will require the depression of a clutch pedal in order to disengage the current gear, a concept that is most decidedly alien to my wife.

Yeah, I have sorta made that point before. You'd think I was holding a grudge or something.

Not so much the truck being held back, it still makes a lot of torque in 6th... it's more the drag of the wallet being pulled back to the pump at 2800 rpm

Trading my 2011 6speed for a 2013 automatic was the best decision I ever made.

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
I am not sure, but I can't wait to test drive one. Not giving up my first gen for a third gen, but maybe later down the road when I am better set financially, I will get one and let my wife drive the first gen and dump her nightmare Explorer. Definitely, I would wait until 2 model years after 2016 though so they could work out the kinks in the new design. All the guys buying new generation models are guinea pigs for the automotive industry, they are the real test subjects for new models. The manufacturer can only do so much testing on the things, but the real test comes from the people who buy them and use them every day.
I would still opt for the automatic though more than likely, sticks aren't much fun in trucks, I like them best in cars.

Can you go into detail? I've been looking for a 6 speed and if you can talk me out of it I would appreciate it.

The 6 speed is a poorly designed transmission. I've never owned one but have test drove many of them and glad I don't have one. They get worse mileage than the automatic, 5th and 6th gear are nearly the same ratio, it has throwout bearing issues, and is very clunky shifting. You can fix the throwout bearing issue pretty easily and once you get used to it and run better gear oil in it, I'm sure it shifts fine. But, I've never heard of one going out before or loosing gears at least so they are reliable, but a poor design.

I just never enjoyed any of my time with the ones I drove, I hate the way the reverse engagement works too.

That about sums up my experiences.

14.8mpg, long throws (and I had a TRD quickshifter) horrible gearing for the highway. Slower than the automatic.

    I much preferred my 1992 4runner's 5speed.

1st is short but 6 th gear at 100 K or 63 mph, was at 2000 rpm.... so what is the issue?

    I don't believe you.

    My 6speed was around 2300@100km/h.

And around here the average speed on the highway is 110-120. Going 110 in the slow lane would yield 15-16mpg. My new truck got 21mpg on the highway home from the dealer.

Plus it's faster, has a stronger tranny. The list goes on.

I prefer a manual and that is what I got. It isn't sporty but it isn't like a domestic manual either. Maybe the 1st Gen was better I don't have one to compare but I can say that it's served me well so far even though it's my first manual 4x4

Well I just got it today, why would I lie?

I wasn't on the highway, but a 80 km back road.... doing 100

I will try and snap a picture for you to prove it....

I love manuals too, but to me they are just a chore to drive in a truck, they are a kick ass blast in a powerful V8 car or sporty tuner type car. My 7.3 Powerstroke is a 5 speed and it's a hog to drive, people think that the Tacoma has long throw shifts, LOL! But the reason I got that is the automatics they used in the diesels back then couldn't handle the torque of the engines. Plus I don't want a 3 speed auto for towing heavy ass loads.

Rural speed limit here is 55 mph, or about 88 km/h. This was exactly 2000 rpm on my six speed 4.0, and is about 2100 rpm on my four cyl 5 speed if you want to compare.

Freeway limit is 70 mph, or 113 km/h. This was just under 2600 rpm on the six. The times I would go 75 or so, that was between 2700 and 2800 rpm. Ultragauge is nice for closer numbers than the red needle :)

I've got an excel spreadsheet set up to show mph in each gear for my own 6 speed manual 2008. Built it so I could see the effects of changing tire sizes on the speed in each gear. Stock truck (265/70-16 tires, 3.73 final drive, 0.85 6th gear) shows 60.3 mph at 2100 rpm.

In general, I agree with those arguing for the automatic. I've had my 6-speed manual truck seven years, and while I get better gas mileage than some here are saying (typically 16-17 in the winter, and 18-19 in summer), it's effectively a four-speed transmission. I always use 1st, 2nd, 4th and 6th; occasionally I'll use 3rd, because vehicle speed can catch you between what's good for 2nd and 4th occasionally. The only time I've used 5th in the last six years was when I was towing something...
