I think insurance is for wherever you're driving. You don't have to re-register your vehicle. Oh shit.. Thanks for reminding me, I need to renew my stuff

Hey guys, somewhat new dude checking in. Been lingering on here for a while. Just picked up a used 2009 Speedway Blue double cab sport back on New Year's Eve. This is my 4th Toyota 4WD. I live in Portsmouth

You would need to register your truck in VA to switch your insurance policy to VA. Since your military status allows you to do so without swapping your license over its pretty easy. Just need a VA address. No residency change required.

The military allows you to keep a "home residency" otherwise you technically have 30 days to change residency.
If your moving to VA use whichever is cheaper.

You guys have been in the service alot longer and know more about this than I do... What do I do in this situation...

Tell USAA they are wrong and that I din't need to switch my insurance because my HoR is NJ or listen to them and switch?

You will need insurance for NJ because that is where your truck is registered, however, you will also need to meet the standards of VA once you actually move here. And obtain an address.

You do NOT have to register in VA. You will just have to maintain the NJ registration. Do some research, some most states have mil rates. Some only if you are not a resident of that state (ie, nj resident registering in VA). Like my wife is a resident of OK, where she only pays $20 a year to register because she is actuve duty mil.

    Hunter,
Since you are military, your home of record will remain the Garbage State. No problem, you can keep you registration and license there. However, USAA is correct your insurance is based on where the vehicle is garaged, hence the reason you need to switch over a VA Insurance policy; nothing else changes.

There is only one place where the above is not true for military that I am aware of--Hawaii. There every vehicle must be registered and inspected with the state of Hawaii

Well its a land Cruiser with a diesel so I've got that going for me.
It's called the 2 outta 3 rule. You must have 2 out of 3 be from the same place. License, insurance and registration. Pick your minimum of 2 and roll with it. There is no requirement to register your junk here in VA but USAA requires you to carry insurance where the vehicle is stored/operated. So if your plate is NJ and your license is NJ and your Insurance says VA you are good to go! That being said it is so cheap to register a vehicle here since we are exempt for personal property taxes if a resident of any other state you would be stupid to not change all your shit over to VA unless your truck won't pass inspection.

Yes you and I discussed Malinois; my Mom trained them a long time ago. Good with kids? Like any dog it depends on how socialized etc. I will tell you that unless you invest a significant amount of time into training and exercise, they are the wrong dog. I was trying to get a Mal for the longest! Great dogs but they need some serious training.

I interviewed with Del Rio Malinois up in Shenandoah but our shoe creek stray filled my dog allowance lol

I'm not on a soapbox, but would like to offer this piece of advice/opinion. If you are looking to for a dog to put through SAR or police work, a reputable breeder/trainer that specializes in that is the best way to go, but you will pay handsomely. If you are looking for a companion dog, then I would only look at a rescue. Two fold reason, 1) the dog needs a loving and caring forever home, and 2) the foster or the breed rescue has already assessed the temperament and the needs of the dog. If you want to get into therapy work, then Brent should chime in, since that is his cup of tea. I know the TV shows are using rescues that they have selected.

Here is an example from one of the rescues of a potential Malinois temperament:

This is a very active girl who loves to run and leap and play!
Bella is NOT submissive or soft! Let's put it this way - today Bella put her head though a hole in a cyclone fence gate, and pulled the gate off its hinges. The gate fell on top of her, but she managed to free herself and still found a way to reach me which was her goal the whole time! She can be very determined, yet her real goal is to just be with a person. Bella is very sweet and wants to love, love, love you!
Bella is missing all of her pre-molars and her vet says that she never had any. Even without those teeth she likes to mouth and she hasn't yet learned to be gentle when she does. She also needs serious manner training -- she'll jump on you to get your attention.
Bella has so much potential. If you have the time to work with her, Bella can become a very happy, wonderful dog!
