Grid-It Center Console Lid Organizer - No Drilling!

Wondering if you prepped the inside of the lid? Wipe with alcohol or similar to remove any surface film?

 

Just removed mine to verify----I placed the coarse side (hooks) on the lid, with the soft loops on the grid-it, apparently same as yourself.
even when reapplying it, the Velcro sticks fine for me.
I did nothing to the lid when initially installed in terms of prep, but then again it was clean.
Interesting you and Swank had problems. I'm guessing the plastic in the lid for your models was of a slightly different composition, thus negating the adhesion.
I've seen this with painting/staining various concrete surfaces fwiw.
Perhaps consider an epoxy suited for plastics?

 

I'm wondering how these will hold up on the heat of the summer. If anyone starts seeing issues. You can always pop a few rivets in the Velcro.

 

There may be some mold release residue on the underside of the lid. Might be beneficial to skuff the underside and clean with rubbing alcohol. For those still having problems, the lid is thick enough one could drive some black screws in the lid on all four sides to secure the grid-it from falling out. Not sure if the screws will interfere with the lid closing so check that first!

Scuffed the underside of the lid with some sandpaper, wiped away the dust and voila. Works like a charm. I better keep it in there since I just killed the resale value with sandpaper!!! lol

 

So I took this in a little of a different direction. I actually ordered the 10 inch organizer instead of the 5 after looking around I decided to mount it to the ceiling in easy reach of the passenger or driver. Used the same heavy duty velcro as everybody else. Mounted the hook side to back of organizer and it sticks right to the headliner.

 

Make sure there is no Armorall or similar product on the lid. Any trace of oily residue will keep the velcro from sticking.

 

Fits like a glove!

 

Does it tear up your headliner if you remove it? Also, let us know if it fell on your head with that wrench and stuff while going over a pothole!

 

I have not had the chance to install, but I went to the local craft shop to get some paracord buckles and found some soft felt with adhesive backing. I may line my glovebox, center console and the cubby below the AC controls with it to stop noises from stuff rolling around. They come in 8x10 sheets for about $1.50 apiece.

 

Hey that's awesome! Perfect fit, and completely removable. I love how the carpets and headliner in the 2nd gens are closed loop material - I couldn't velcro anything to my first gen. Love seeing new uses for this product.

 

It would definitely damage the fibers in the headliner and make it look "fuzzy," but depends on how many times you remove the organizer. If you don't remove it frequently it shouldn't be too bad. The more you remove it, the more the fibers in the headliner would get yanked on and the worse it would look.

 

well cutting out the notches so the console can close is a pain. going to have to buy another one of these to give it a try (i'm not giving up on this). Cut too deep after many attempts to get it right. i'll probably need better scissors

 

I used a cutting wheel on a Dremel to be more exact. Worked great! Then I cut a long strip off the top edge to make it go around the lid release. Look for my pics in this thread, response #53. Once I got it notched and cut, I used a lighter to melt the material. Works like a charm.

Then I scuffed the lid with sandpaper, used some heavy duty velcro and it's all set.

 

I just finished Installing mine. I cleaned the console with rubbing alcohol and that's it. I used the heavy duty Velcro from Home Depot. Used the Velcro brand. White box with a black stripe on the side to be exact. I Used the wide one. And it holds like a charm.

 

I got mine in the mail yesterday. will probable install with double sided tape whenever the temp here gets over 30, its freezing. ill update later

 

That's what I did, Pudge. 2 strips lengthwise down the center.. works perfectly. Didn't see a need for Velcro myself, and the double sided foam tape is easily replaceable and removable. The organizer comes off easily if I need to remove it, and sticks back on just fine.

 

that's great to hear thanks. did you cut the pocket off the back? seems like that would be best but if I don't need to I wont.

 

I didn't, and I didn't remove the zipper pull either. Sits perfectly without the need to cut anything except the notches for the lid hinges. Perfectly to me, anyway. I pulled on the material with it fully zipped up and there wasn't really any noticeable give or stretch, so I didn't bother.
