I just got my TRD O/R and this is my first experience with the Rugged Trails. I know the general opinion here of these tires is pretty bad. But what's the main complaint? Do they wear quick? Poor road performance? Poor off-road performance? Poor traction in snow?

    Thanks

I would have to say poor on road, poor off road, poor snow/ice/rain performance.

My brother purchased his 2015 last weekend and it came with the rugged fails. I drove his truck around the block in some melting snow/ice/wet roads and I had forgotten how bad they were.

I've had it in some snow at this point, but it's hard for me to really say how those tires are doing compared to the General Grabbers I had on my old truck. I'm driving this truck very differently so far, partly because it's an auto and partly because I'm just kind of cruising around at an easy pace because it's new.

These are OEM because of the cush carlike ride and better gas mileage. My hunch also is that dealers leave them seriously under inflated, so you will get an even cushier ride when you take it out for a test drive.

I used them only a couple times off-road, and the sidewalls got all chewed up. For financial reasons, I was going to try to stick it out with these for a while, but went and put BFG All-Terrain T/A KO2's on just yesterday.....

The rugged trails are one of the few complaints I had about the truck. I found them a poor tire in most wet/snowy conditions and especially subject to punctures as (I believe) that the rubber is soft and sharp objects penetrate easily.
I use my truck for travel on dirt roads here in NH, VT and ME to go to remote fishing spots. I have a 2011 and have never had so many punctures from sharp rock penetration. I carry a flat fix kit and compressor whenever I go. Yes, I know it could just be "luck", but I travelled the same roads with two other vehicles with BFG Long Trails and Michelin LTX and had only one flat in about 10 years.
I changed the tires out for a set of the Michelins because the combination of lousy handling and poor puncture resistance from the Rugged Trails. One or the other of the problems would have been OK to live with, but both were too much

I don't do much off-roading really at all, but it is important to me that they perform decent in snow and on the road. Also if they tend to get flats I'll dump them in no time.

I have not had any issues with them, and this winter we have had near record snowfall. I will be keeping them and getting all the life out of them i can.

they're a good road tire. not good offroad. if all you do is drive around the street, commute, etc... they will be fine for you.

I lived with the Dunlops for the first 35-40k miles on my 2007. Went to General Grabbers after that.

I am looking at the New BFG AT KO2 in a 265/75R16 with a 2-2.5"/1.5" OME Lift.

I had the Rugger Terrains on my 4Runner; it was a good tire I didn't have any complaints with them. I put around 30k highway miles on them before I traded in the 4Runner.

    grip in rain sucks
grip in snow is not there
wants to hydroplane on highway puddles
    -------------------------------------------------

sidewall integrity is completely absent in them

I cuffed one rock it ripped open the sidewall rubber black layer
    and exposed the white layer.

----the exact same rock and exact same spot----, I rub hundreds of times with
a michelin ltx-ms and the sidewall just laughs at it

    -----------------------
B-fails, as seen in my sig pic....
an OK tire for zero offroad (and don't rub a curb with them either!!)

but first chance you get ditch them

Hydroplaning is a concern of mine too. I haven't really experienced that yet, but I was wondering if that would be a problem with this kind of tire.

I do think they ride nice though on the highway.

Poor at everything really, however, they ARE excellent at wearing out fast.

In short, I think the Rugged Trails are not a tire than folks would buy to put on their vehicle....that said, they are OK for a street tire and so so at most everything else...OEM cheap tires. Unless they cause you some issues, run them...they are paid for. They don't have the sidewall strength and such for serious Off Road as they are P rated tires. Then again, they will be much "cushier" as stated than any LT tire you may put on the truck. The same tires came stock on my Tundra and were pretty bald after about 10k (mountain roads and they chip seal so it is like driving on sand paper)...went to BFG AT's which were LT tires....no issues, but the price got so high that I went back to P rated tires the last time around and got the BFG Rugged Terrain's 265/70/17's and have been really happy with them. The stock Rugged Trails were about the same rating as a cheap pair of shoes....do the job, just not very well.
