First time poster in this thread. Headed over the GWNF during a cabin trip in Luray for my wife's birthday. Explored a few fireroads and had a blast. It was sloppy, muddy, snowy fun! Well worth the drive from Arlington.

    Welcome

Where in Arlington are you located? I think I may have seen you around.. I remember seeing a lifted MGM somewhere around the Clarendon/Courthouse area, and there's another that is in the apartment complex next to mine down in Shirlington.

Great pics, and welcome to TW! We'll probably have a group head out to the trails in Edinburg, VA in the next few weeks.

Thanks for the suggestions on tire places guys but I got the new wheels mounted this morning at the Ourisman Fairfax Toyota dealership. They did a great job. I'll post pics as soon as the weather clears up! Love the new wheels!

    Thanks all for the welcome!

LesPaul, I'm in south Arlington, between Columbia Pike and Rt 50, very close to Fort Myer. You probably have seen me driving around! I ride my bike to work in DC, but cruise around Clarendon getting groceries, wine, and bike stuff like a yuppie all the time.

540taco: I stayed at http://luraymountaincabins.com/. The cabin and owners were great. I would go again. Its actually in Stanley VA, about 15 mins from downtown Luray. If you want to get wasted with buddies I wouldn't recommend it, but if you want a romantic weekend with a loved one its awesome. I've attached a picture of the cabin.

In addition to the cabin, I visited Cave Ridge Vineyard (a friend of a friend runs it) and had a blast tasting the wine. Since I had a connection, we even got to do some barrel tastings. I've attached a pic of my wife and I at Cave Ridge. It's on the pricier end, but you want to try some truly world class VA wine, go!

The GWNF fire road was unnamed (as far as I could figure anyway). I took 33W from Harrisonburg about 20 miles past Rawley Springs. You climb a fairly steep hill. You'll know when your at the hill, its the first steep part of the road with winding switchbacks. As you head up that hill look for the left turn (its the first left you run into on your way up the hill, and its right along a bend) Its a very red dirt road (I've included a picture of the red dirt), you'll know it when your on it. Be careful, the road inst that bad, but its slippery and pretty narrow. It's one of the many routes that will take you to "Flagpole Knob". You can read a pretty good write up about GWNF trails here: http://www.dirtopia.com/wiki/George...rth_River_Ranger_District_(Harrisonburg_Area)

Please take it easy out there, they are closing trails left and right around here because of irresponsible behavior and environmental regulations (not trying to hate, some are for good reason).

If anyone has any other spots to suggest, please post them up. I'd love to find more trails within 2-3 hours of the national capitol.

    Cheers,

    -R

Looks/sounds like a good weekend! Its beautiful out west of the madness. I live in Sperryville just east of Luray on 211. I have a long commute, and my days are often long, but I wouldn't trade it for anything. It is perfect for my lifestyle. I'm sure some people on here may consider my driveway "wheelin". Pros and Cons.

Side note- if you like wineries I have a few favorites I can recommend. Also been meaning to check out Copper Fox Distillery but I just haven't had a free weekend in a while...

Boogie/Brian: Sorry didn't notice your note until this morning. Thanks for the invite, I travel a fair bit for work, but will be there if I am free!

I haven't heard of the Edinburg trails, but I'll try looking them up. Is there a certain Edinburg trail (or any trail for that matter) that you suggest? My wife and I love camping so if that property allows it, that's all the better.

I grew up in Arlington, but went to school in northern CA (Humboldt State) and worked for the Forest Service out there (Humboldt, Trinity, Lassen, and Plumas counties). I moved back a couple years ago and only got my truck about one year ago. So I am very new to VA offroading.

There are at least 2 trails in Edinburg: Tasker's Gap and Peter's Mill Run. I've done Peter's Mill Run a few times and it's fun without being challenging, more like a scenic bumpy drive. I've heard that Tasker's Gap is more challenging but nothing crazy. Both trail entrances are very close to each other. I'd love to try Tasker's Gap next time we get a group to head out there.

Awesome. I may have seen you around then. I'm right at the intersection of south Glebe and 395 so I go up that way pretty often for the bars/beer stores/work/etc.

And that trail sounds pretty cool. I'd love to get some people together sometime this spring/summer to head down to either flagpole or shoe creek.

I've heard about the URD setup but everything that I can find only shows that it's applicable for a 2005-2008. I'd only hope that they have their site updated if it's applicable to 2009+ because I'd be interested in comparing to TRD.
