So, I decided on just doing the boot slide mod. Anyone know of a place I can purchase an OEM boot for cheap? the dealer only sells it as a kit that comes with inner and outer for $50. I really only need inner.

For $60 you can get all 4 boots inners and outers from SDHQ. And no the fins do not rub. Let me snap a pic or two for you.

You should be able to get inner boot kits from the dealer, if not they can order it. Should be no more than $20

I KNOW! I was just thinking the same thing. Lmao. That's what I'm telling you though. The problem with lifts is not so much the CV angles but more so the angle the boots end up at. The way the stock ones are molded they have the fins in less than ideal spots and the inner boot on OE is too short so what happens is when you put it into a situation where you wheel the inner boots get stretched and wants to pull itself up (or down depending what you are doing with the IFS) so in turn what ends up happening is you get grease leakage and premature wearing and or tearing from them.

That makes sense. Is this the kit that you bought? Did you just use the Swepco molly grease?

    Those are the ones.

On the inners I used Redline grease that my local parts store had and for the outers I used standard Stalube CV grease, 4oz tubes.

For the Redline Grease that came in a huge 12oz grease jar so when I was rebuilding my axles I took the shafts, flipped them to the inner sides and literally dipped them in the jar and called it good to go. Lmao.

I based it upon the previous amount of grease that was on them from the factory packets. So after I dipped them in they looked to have the same amount as previous. :D

You should get them. I haven't been disappointed with my decision to get them as aftermarket over OE for my lifted application and from what's going on with you based on your original post and questions neither will you be. forget all this boot slide mod crap.

Try Camelback Toyota. You can get a kit for just the inner boot or both inner and outer, with all clamps, clips and lube.

2nd gen observations and experiences do no not apply to 1st gens.

The boot slide done correctly with OEM boots will last for, well the jury is still out on that one. I'm the original creator of the BSM and mine still look new after 11-12 lifted years and thousands of off road miles a year. I have done upwards of 50 with zero issues. Hands down the best method is the "internal stop" using the rubber ring and the old c-clip. The boot only needs to slide about 3/8" to prevent rubbing. The problem there is that puts the clamp right on top of the edge of the recess where the boot is supposed to sit (stock). Just clamping it there makes it want to slide back into the recess. You will see this once you get the boot off. This is why I originally used adhesive. The internal boot stop allows the clamped area to be "mostly" beyond the edge of the recess and the clamp just assures no leaks. A fair amount of folks have had the boot tear in the valley between the fins when they slide the boot far enough (too far) to have the clamp entirely beyond the recess.
Stolen pic of what you want as a "stop".

Spread out the newspaper, cut off the old boot and clamps and go to town with your available methods for degreasing. Once on the bench it takes me
a 1/2 hour to change out both boots and slide the inner. You just need to be smarter than a few pints of grease.
The OEM clamps use a special tool for installation. You can get by with "end nippers", looks like a wire cutter with the jaws perpendicular to the handles. The cool tool (NAPA) looks like this and crimps from 3 directions.

The "holy grail" of internal boot stops. Ta daaaa.

Is camelback Toyota a dealership in AZ? That was the only one I saw when I googled them. My local toyota wants $45 for the inner kit.

Also, does that holy Grail of stops comes out of my current axle or would I need to make that? just curious if there is anything else I need to purchase besides the boot kit.

Thanks for the info on Camelback! called them and they had it. I was able to order online for $22 each plus shipping. Total I paid for both was $5 more than what my 2 local dealerships wanted to charge me for 1. lol

Glad it worked out. The "holy grail" was the first "internal" boot stop I made in an attempt to do away with the 24 hour curing time required when using adhesive. Then I realized the other quicker easier methods. It's all in the ttora links found in the sticky.

 it's refreshing to find an honest dealer that doesn't price gouge like a mofo
